Anybody had any of these? Im really interested in the Local Species....and what price are these going for?
I was not a fan of Isabel. The bottle was overcarbonated and gushed like crazy. The mix of flavors just didn't work for me. The Local Species was tasty. It reminded me of a witbier that used some american hops.
If you live in Northern Virginia, there's a Blue Mountain Barrel Series tasting today at Norm's Beer and Wine in Vienna from 4-7 pm.
My area just got Blue Mountain stuff in this week. I tried Local Species, Isabel, Dark Hollow and Mandolin. They were all pretty solid, some were a little strange in their flavor profiles but my fav of the group (and the one I bought) was Mandolin. What I liked was their price, all except Local Species was $10.99, with LS being less.
every bottle of Isabel seems to be gushing but it's not infected or anything. was very surprised at Local Species - want to get another bottle!
I grabbed 3 of the 4 this week on a trip to DC..everything except for mandolin.. DC Brau robust porter was good stuff, wish we could get it in NC
I just traded in my Isabel at the Wine Warehouse in Cville for another of the Local Species, which I REALLY liked. They also were holding some Hoptimum for me that just came in. I was wondering if this was some old dusty crap that their distributor wanted to get rid of, but no, delicious as ever. Beer Run is definitely my more social beer stop in Cville but Wine Warehouse does a really nice job on setting aside the limited releases.
Yep, my bottle of Isabel exlpoded all over my kitchen last night. I was pretty disappointed by it, as you can tell by my review.
I was excited to try these but was disapointed by all of them. Working on the dark hollow now and it seems to have that same champaign yeast carbonation and taste that I didn't enjoy in black ops. I keep picking up a chalky taste as I did on all three of them..nice bottle and marketing but the beer needs some work IMO..
I tried Local Species and frankly was not impressed. I bought it over Mandolin and the porter because it was aged in bourbon barrels. It had decent carbonation but pretty much no taste up front. It had a hint of bourbon and a bit harsh bitterness at the end...I might be spoiled in the bourbon aspect of it though as I've had Hardywood's Bourbon Cru...
I've liked the few beers ive had from Blue Mountain, but the barrel house series is a bit of a let down. Havent tried Local Species yet, it sounds like it may be worth a try.
Ugh, just tasted Dark Hollow again, pond scum is the first thing that comes to mind. Maybe its a bad keg, but the beer guy is pretty good about not doing that here.
Local Species is the best for sure. Dark Hallow is good but more if you enjoy those thin BA Stout like Dark Intrigue. Otherwise it may not be for you.
