Bock: Ale or Lager?

    First of all, the title "German beer law"is pretty misleading. The official title is vorläufiges Biersteuergesetz, dates back from 1993, and is full of exceptions and special rules when you see the full text.So, it is allowed to brew all kinds of stuff,esp. as long as you can call it "regional specialty".

    Apparantly Rogue's APA Dead Guy Ale, is the best Maibock in the world.

    I assumed "lager" based on this site and the 2015 BJCP.

    This is the correct answer to this thread. There is plenty of good history sharing here, but I don't think that it has anything to do with what the OP is asking.

    The previous TABC laws that were not in effect when I got into craft beer had nothing to do with the question. I originally asked because I have seen bocks referred to as an ale, and others as a lager.
