@budsNpils -- and all, I believe Ayinger Maibock in bottles is a new import this year -- keep your hopes up!

I enjoy the doughy sweetness of this beer balanced against a just right spiced hop bite. Bready malt up front with a hint of honey that gets cut by the aforementioned hops but still finishes slightly sweet and peppery. It's also got a fair amount of heft to the body without being hot like some of the other beers of the style in the same ABV range(>7%) that I've had. I don't know that it's worth near $20 for a 4 pack but I'd happily shell out $13-15 for it. Apologies for the initial vagueness.

This beer finder may be too good! I used it and found the beer at a store about 30 miles from me, but it took about a week before it showed up on the store's website. But at least the beer finder is accurate.

30 miles being the closest?

I never got to go before moving away for college so I need to make it back for Bockfest at some point. Stumbling out of Arnold's sounds fun.

No need. It's just often that someone says "I liked it." with no real qualifications. This doesn't tell me I might like it, so I like to hear what was so good.

Yep. And it's a store that's part of a chain but the location here in town, as well as in the bigger cities of Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids didn't get it. Go figure!I

And the description of it that @Mortal_Wombat wrote above is pretty spot on.

In my experience, all Ayinger beers are great, so I just buy on sight. :sunglasses:

Very nice bready malty aroma, not dark bread but light, with maybe a little honey in there.

Taste wise it is a tad sweet, but not cloying at all, more of a dry sweetness. Semi-sweet malts, then earthy/grainy spice on the long finish. Some pepper in there. The alcohol adds some great oomph but it's not obnoxious. Not much in the way of dark malt flavor, except maybe some light caramel or something like that.

I look to German beers to find the paradigm for bocks and lagers, but the problem is I haven't had many Germain maibocks, simply because they're not around. If I had to guess though, I'd say this is a teensy bit sweeter and more floral than the "average" bock (whatever that is).

I'll have to taste test against some locals, but after having a couple I'd have to say it's my favorite maibock, and it's not really close. I think I paid $14 for 4, and that's more than I'd normally pay, but I don't know what I'd get that's comparable. It's like buying St. Bernardus 12--sometimes you just gotta have it.

Do you get distribution or was this a brewery pickup? I cannot find this in my two favorite retail shops in Asheville/Hendersonville.
    Cheers!

I stopped by the brewery to pick some up, but I have seen it in a couple of stores around Charlotte as well

Well dammit -- you guys made me do it -- I saw the Ayinger Maibock and took the leap!

If it's not special, someone's gonna answer!

Easy there chucklehead, I bought it last night before meeting a friend at a taproom -- I didn't run home and pop another beer to assess on a tainted palate.

    Patience is a virtue.

Well, @dcw6363 -- you forced me in to drinking a beer on a Thursday afternoon! ()
But I gotta tell you, you might not be happy with my assessment.

On first pass, the Ayinger seems a little too hot and over-attenuated to me. Just not rich and luscious in what I expect in a Maibock.

I took notes and pics that I'll add later, but I wanted to satisfy your curiosity.

In the meantime, you've also forced me to pour a local in direct comparison; More Brewing's Maibock. The first taste was chewy, almost fruity malts with a bready backbone. This beer won me over last year as just what I expect in a Maibock, and this year's batch seems to have hit the mark again.

No worries. At least we got some day drinking done.

I admit that I am in general biased towards Germans. But I really should do a blind taste test between Ayinger and some locals. It would have to be really blind though, as it would be easy to tell the difference between Ayinger and, say, Lakefront just by looking at them.

Also I loved the slight boozy hotness coming out of winter. In late spring it might hit me differently.

I had the More last year but it was in a bar and I don't remember much other than that I liked it.

"If it's not special, someone's gonna answer!" I just hope there are no consequences.

Me too, but sometimes Ayinger can be hit or miss for me.
    I get that completely.
Well, I was being silly -- only one who might really answer is Merchant du-Vin.

And the real takeaway here is a $15 import of four 11.2 ounce bottles vs. a local 4-pack of 16 ounce cans for $10 -- I honestly think it's a question of freshness.

Both beers are good, but I'd recommend the More before the Ayinger in a Chicago minute.
