To all our German members -- please avert your eyes from this less-than optimal drinking experience!

Proper glassware at a fest in the middle of a city would never work

Had a Lakefront maibock yesterday. It was very good, but if you handed it to me in September I might think it was a Märzen

Really? I wonder if they changed the recipe? Always been a solid Maibock to me.

Are you mixing up Märzen and Festbier? Festbier and Maibock can mingle characters, but I always find good Maibocks to be richer and "chewier" than Festbier -- which are always drier and crisper to my palate.

Gotcha. I will keep an eye out for it. Hopefully I will be able to find it.

    Thanks!

Too late! I cannot unsee that!:rofl::rofl::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

(I had some imperial stout in a cup just like that last weekend :innocent: The kicker is that I tapped it myself.)

I have had Maibocks that I thought at the time reminded me of an amped up Märzen. But you are correct - most Maibocks seem to be more similar to a Festbier than a Märzen.

Would you consider Hofbrau's Maibock to share more characteristics with their Festbier or their Märzen? I just read my review of this beer and one of my lines was "Very much a significantly dialed-up Oktoberfest (esp. a Marzen)".

I had some luck on my beer run today. My local Ayinger source had just gotten in their Maibock. They had also just gotten in Hofbrau's Maibock. I picked up some of each.

They have since at least 2016. I can't say for before that.

I found one of these at my local Wegman's last weekend. I have never had it, so of course I picked that bottle. I wonder how similar to (or different from) Andygator it is.

HB doesn't brew a Märzen (at least for export). I've only ever had their Festbier -- and it's one of my favorites.

Their Maibock is a really different animal than most Maibocks. It's supposed to follow the original HB recipe. To me it's an amped up... Maibock.

It's just got more chewy body than a Märzen as well as more alcohol.

No I meant Märzen. But I was mainly commenting on the appearance. It's much darker/more amber than the Ayinger.

Although maybe it's my imagination due to the color, but I thought I noticed more burnt toast and autumn malts in the Lakefront. So to me that one was a little more of a souped-up Märzen, whereas the Ayinger and the Dovetail (going from memory, haven't had it yet this year) can taste a little more like a souped-up festbier.

Well, I haven't had it yet this year, so maybe Lakefront's done some tweaking. I've called it "deep gold" in the past, but I haven't updated my review since 2016. I definitely remember enjoying it to-style last year and the year before.

That said, I did notice Ayinger's Maibock is pretty pale compared to many others.

FWIW -- a LF Maibock from last year:

And Spaten Märzen from last year:

Brewing Projekt Totally Kinda Evil Doppelbock, 8.4% ABV. Pours deep brown with a 1.5 finger tan head that left no lacing. Nose is malty. Taste is slightly sweet malt, moderately bitter. Excellent mouthfeel, overall excellent.

Pretty rare around here to find any kind of bock in the wild, competing with all the IPAs, NEIPAs, sours, and stouts.
