The other thing may be that it's last year's stock the store had left over.

Capital doesn't have the clearest dates, as I recall.

Cardboard, wet paper, is usually a sign of old beer.

I had two great bock beers today from the Sherman Street Beer Company in Allentown, PA.

The first was a 6.5% effort called Mama Said Bock You Out. It was billed as being brewed with pretzels, mustard seed and salt - perfect for sipping in a bier garden. It was light enough to have more than one, yet hefty enough to satisfy. The toasty notes were not specifically indicative of pretzels, but it certainly had a fine bready quality.

The second was a 14% triplebock aged in port barrels. I was worried that this one would be too sweet, but it was a prefect digestif that possessed all the sweet maltiness that one might crave without ever getting overboard. The alcohol was well in check - in fact this was dangerously drinkable!

Never heard of Sherman Street; so noted. That 2nd beer sounds delicious.

I was just there today and had the port barrel version. It was perfectly balanced and never go to be too much.

I also had a 6.5% bock called Mama Said Bock You Out.

Both of these highlight Brewmaster Beau's skill at crafting exceptional lagers.

I'm not sure if you are near Allentown; if so, make sure to stop and check out this little place. Beau, the brewmaster, is particularly skillful at brewing lagers.

I'm not, but pass through occasionally to visit the in-laws in NJ. Plus I like little places and lagers!

This is something new for me; I don't drink many smoked beers. The nose weirdly had a hint of grapefruit, but the taste was all syrupy malt and smoke. I could probably get used to this. Goes quite well with a soft pretzel.

Spaten has always been my favorite Munich brewery, but HB is a very close second.

Sent to the US as the Winter Spezial, but it's their Delicator Doppelbock if you look closely.

Next time you pass through, give it a try. It's a short trip from the Airport Road (Route 987) exit of US 22.

Yeah, that is a technical brewing flaw.

I know that cardboard is associated with beer staling. When was your beer bottled?

    Cheers!

Having a Sapwood Cellars Dreifeld. Described as a triple bock aged in PX sherry barrels. It drinks more like a sweet sherry than a beer, but sherry is the one style of wine I actually like, so I'm digging it.

Enegren's Christmas Bock is incredible. Hoping they release it again later this year.

It sure seems like you drank an old bottle.

Maybe better luck next time? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ayinger Maibock - I love this beer. I bought bottles of it a week or so ago, and it's the first time that I've ever had it here in the US. I've homebrewed a clone version of it a few times since around 2005, and that began my love affair with this style. I'd drink them year-round if I could get them. Maybe I should start brewing again.

Drinking a bottle of Schlenkerla Urbock. Aroma is dominated by the savory woody smoke but the taste is more balanced with some bready malts

there usually is a date on the bottle neck, it's very hard to find, but I have found it in the right light
