    hi all,

Brewed a porter today with a buddy and had some trouble transferring the beer into the fermentation bucket after boil. The brew only had 2.25 oz of hops and the boil screen completely clogged (the outside was caked with hop residuals). I use a 15 gallon mega pot and got a 12 inch boil screen. I bought a 1/2 inch adapter that screws onto boil screen and then pushes into bulkhead. This was not a hoppy beer at all and the boil screens get excellent reviews overall. Question is, what did I do wrong?

    Any advice is appreciated.

Was advised to get a hop spider to work around this, so I'll try that.

A hop spider would be a good idea. Others use a double mesh strainer that can sit on top of your fermenter or funnel.

I just place a large hop filter on the bottom of my fermentation bucket and drain the wort from my boiling bucket directly through the hop filter. As the level of the wort in the bucket rises, I just lift the hop filter so that the top is just above the level of the wort. Works great every time, and I'm left with very little trub after fermentation (mostly just yeast, which makes it nice for re-harvesting).

I use a boil screen for whole hops (which are what I mostly use), and it work great. For pellet hops I always use nylon mesh bags to contain the hops.
