Had a customer ask me what'd make a good boilermaker with what beer they were getting and I went kinda blank. Jameson is usually my go to shot+beer (if it's not a Jager night).

    What're your fave combinations?

Give them something bourbon barrel aged and tell them it was premixed just for them

ala Rumpkin, I would say that any heavily spiced pumpkin beer and a nice shot of dark rum would probably go quite well together, 'tis the season.

Lime vodka in Leine's Summer Berry Shandy.
When life gives you shitty beer (term used loosely), you might as well catch a decent buzz.

It's been a few years since my last boilermaker, but for me it was always Jim Beam and PBR.

I've added a small amount of bourbon to stouts before with varying degrees of success, but by far my favorite attempt was when I added a 1/4 shot of bourbon to Anchor's Our Special Ale. The bourbon worked so well with the holiday spiciness of the beer.

It's not the same thing. Something magical happens in the barrel that mixed the beer and bourbon differently. I like to think there are bourbon sprites and barrel fairies that visit the beer and put a spell on it.

Ive had 2 with great success, Ten Fidy with a shot of Auchentoshan Three Wood single malt scotch, and Old Rasputin with a shot of Cofia (hazelnut espresso vodka)from Bend Distillery. Both amazingly delicious!

In college I always liked the classic Irish Car Bomb, and a shot of amaretto in cheap light beer is a fun novelty (dr pepper beer)

just as a side note, on my 21st birthday some random d-bag at the bar was "nice" enough to buy me a drink...i was too drunk to notice/care what it was, downed it without looking, and immediatly regretted it - turns out it was a double shot each of tequila and hot sauce in light beer...i don't recommend that one

On a more (semi)serious note, I bet a shot of Frangelico would be great in any coffee stout

Agreed. Boilermaker = cheap beer with a shot of cheap whiskey dropped in.

Of course, there is no right answer. Boilermaker theory would be (ask the old guys!) there should be contrast and not harmony - these should complement each other. Therefore, I'd suggest not burbon or anything sweet or smooth. There must be the contrast of a rye whiskey - which is why the old guys of the post WW2 generation went with Canadian ryes.

Whipcream Vodka and Lindemans Framboise is actually a great boiler maker. I also love drinking Campari with a big citrusy IPA. Not mixed together, just back and forth.
