Russian River Brewing Co. (Windsor, California)

Double Dry-Hopped Pliny the Elder (Two Stage Double Dry Hopped Double IPA); 8%; 16oz can
We took our regular Pliny the Elder recipe and doubled the dry hop amount and started the first dry hop during the middle of primary fermentation. DDH-PTE carries a firm bitterness along with notes of pine, citrus, and stone fruit with a lingering, dry finish.

Love RR. Was supposed to be out your way for our 25th anniversary, but had to put it off. My question is do you have any plans to increase distribution? I live outside of Chicago and would love to have access to your beer. Cheers!

    All about dry-hopping:
    • How does multi-stage dry-hopping differ from adding it all at once?
    • Do the first stage hops get removed before the second stage hops are added or do they get double the contact time?
    • What are you aiming for with the first stage dry hops being added mid-fermentation?
    • Is mid-fermentation defined as high krausen or some other measure?
As an Eastbanian who loves the Sonoma/Mendocino coast, picking up a case of Pliny in Santa Rosa en route is the perfect way to start a vacation:

I can't wait - I've not had the Pliny the Elder - but I know about this beer and RR and I am so looking forward to this as part of the IPA Fest tasting.

What water sources do you use for the beer you brew?

Will you distribute your beers to Texas in the future?

First of all, must say thank you to the beer gods for the ‘accidental’ three DDH Pliny’s we received in our two shipments. We will not be not sharing the three Pliny’s.
Thank you for brewing this beer! It’s our favorite!

background (opinion): some of the best beers and wines come from the Russian River Valley.

question: What makes Russian River Valley so unique in the beer and wine world? What’s in your water?!

Last (a respectful yet strong request): will you please consider TX distribution? How about just the 915?

Do you consider hops being like grapes are to wine where each harvest can result in a somewhat different flavor profile year to year depending on that years growing conditions, and if so how do you adjust to ensure the flavor your going for is consistent in your Pliny the Elder/Younger brews? Also love your explanation of how you are leveraging your hop back within your system and thanks for being part of this epic festival!

I've gotta admit, this is one of the unicorns in the box for me. I've had Pliny before, thanks to beer trades, but when I saw this starting to hit social media, etc and it was the icing on the cake when I saw it in the box for this event.

I know i have never tried this beer before. But it sounds like a game changer from the reviews. I love the setup you have for the brewery too. Great video and great explanation of the beer and dry and double-dry hopped mixing. Looking forward for this one. Thanks!! Oh, my question. Where did you get the name pliny the elder? How did that come about? I appreciate it Vinnie.

Love Russian River and Santa Rosa! It was the topper for my 20th wedding anniversary trip which also involved many tours in wine country. I try to get up there everytime I am in San Francisco for business. I too was excited when I saw it on the list of beers for the festival. Can't wait to test it! Keep making great beer!

What knowledge, if any, did you all bring with you from the champagne business that influenced your brewing?

Our first visit to the brew pub in Santa Rosa was life changing. Love the beers and visit often. I've noticed that many of your beers, including the low alcohol beers, are nice and dry. What are some tips to home brewers to get beers into that sweet spot of not too sweet and not overly dry?

Any chance that you might pick a bar in DC to carry your beer, like Monk’s in Philadelphia?

I know you get asked this all the time... with all of the hype around your brewery, why not expand distro further?

Thrilled to have this beer for the fest! Cheers.

Have you been surprised by the popularity of Pliny the Younger? Every time I go back to the Bay Area to visit family it seems like that year's line has doubled in size (at least pre-covid), at least from the local news stories.
