Hi Everyone - I am looking to start a Boston area beer tasting group. Start out by just having some informal meetings/tastings and hopefully growing into a bigger more "serious" group.

Just wanted to gauge the interest of others on this board....thoughts?

Have thought about the same thing for a while. All about logistics though. Where, when, who. But mostly where and when.

There was a serious attempt to get this going about a year ago, and it quickly spun out of control with demand and collapsed under its own weight. Too many cooks spoil the broth and all that...

So yes, there is plenty of interest. My suggestion would be to start smaller and try to start a group in just your town (or neighborhood if you live in Boston). I would imagine most towns inside 128 could get it done easily.

One of the main problems with previous attempts was that there are really no public/commercial venues to hold a tasting (due to licensing/BYO laws), so you have to have it at someone's house, and most people don't want all of BA showing up at their house. So I'd echo cbeer88's recommendation to start small and expand as practicable.

I started up a small tasting group a few months ago for the Southie area (BROS - Beer Roundtable Organization of Southie) and it's been great so far; great beers shared, great to make new friends, etc. That said, as many others have stated, it is absolutely critical that you keep it small. Few people have the space for more than say 10-12 people, and fewer have the desire to host that many. It's also a great way to help set expectations in terms of what kind of bottles to bring. The Boston area is just too damn big with too many BAs to have one or two tasting groups.

I would be interested in setting up something locally in Somerville with you and any other somerville BAs if thats something you or others would be interested in.

I'm in Mission Hill, walking distance to JP - maybe we could start up a group for that area. I agree 100% with the neighborhood sentiment by many here. I participated in a DC/ Baltimore group when I lived there, it was a great time, but after a couple years was starting to outgrow itself.

I'm in Somerville also and would be interested... I've got way too many 750ml RIS' that I don't want to open alone. :grinning:

Id be down for something in the Amesbury/Newburyport/Haverhill area if anyones around there. Now when you guys say tastings you mean like bringing bottles that are limited, retired, brewery only or not distributed locally correct? I have seen many diff takes on what peoples idea of a tasting is and just want to be sure im reading this right as ive shown up before where people brought all locals and everyday regular stuff and i wasnt expecting that.
