i'll be in Boston 5/16-19. I'm staying at Logan, but will be traveling to Dedham area on Tuesday and Wednesday. Are there any bottle shops I should hit up in between? How available are Trillium and Night Shift? If I have time for one brewery, which should it be? Same for a bar -- I've Ben told Lord Hobo and Publick House. Any good places to pick up a bottle shipper as checked luggage? Thanks in advance.
If you are looking for a true brewery experience I would recommend NS. You can order pints , flights , etc. Trillium is great but you are limited to buying growlers and bottles to go. I'd definitely hit it up to pick up a few bottles as you'll get the best selection right at the source. While you are there hit up Fort Point Market , which has one of the best selections in the area. Boston Wine Exchange is about a half mile from there on Devonshire and also has a nice selection. Enjoy your trip
Would you recommend Ft Point Market over Charles St. liquors? I have a short window of time after hitting Trillium tomorrow during lunch where I could either go to Fort Point Market or Charles St. Liquors which is back closer to my hotel
Def hit Ft Point Market if you can in the time frame. On the way back into the city from there walking you can hit Bees Knees on the same road on the left side. Great selection too.
In the city itself, I really like Hopster's Alley in Boston Public Market, usually gets Night Shift deliveries Weds and or Friday's, and always has something good. They're great on social media so you can follow them to see if/when anything good comes in. They are New England beers only, so really showcases the local flavor. Had a chance to buy Lunch, Proclamation, Captain's Daughter, Faminghammers, Lost Nation, Night Shift, etc. there. Worth a stop if you're in the area, but definitely agree with Ft. Point Market and Boston Wine Exchange recommendation. Also if you're going to Dedham, might be worth stopping at the new Canton Trillium location. They currently only do samples and fills/bottles, but you'll be in the area.
If you're going to Trillium, you will literally be next door to Fort Point Market, so definitely worth a stop in.
Appreciate the help. So it looks like the silver line might be the best way to hit up Fort Point Market, Bees Knees and Trillium. Is that correct? Any of these places going to have a problem with me carrying in a backpack so I can schlepp beer back to the hotel?
Can't imagine the backpack would be a problem, people bring them to Trillium all the time. Bee's Knees is pretty thin on selection these days; I'd be surprised if you find anything there but not at Fort Point. But it is next door to Flour!
If you're traveling down to Dedham by car, hit Bin Ends which is right off of 93 in Braintree. Nice bottle and can selection.
As somebody who bikes with a backpack to Trillium somewhat regularly, Trillium's bottles are 750ml not 22oz and the glass appears to have been designed to be thick enough to survive an earthquake in the Boston area and are noticeably heavier. So however many bombers you are thinking of fitting in that backpack, I would multiply by about 75%.
If you're coming directly from the airport, take the SL1 to the Word Trade Center stop and walk down Congress St. If you're already in the city, I'd recommend the Redline to South Station as a better alternative - from South Station, walk down Summer St. and take the secret stairs to A St. or the walkway along Ft. Point Channel from Summer to Congress St.
There's a guy in the Pacific thread who creates a Visiting San Diego seasonal thread that people usually link when threads like this come up. I don't necessarily mind these threads because I like hearing what out-of-towners think about our little beer town, but it might be helpful to create to streamline a lot of questions. Someone should make it. Not me though, I'm too lazy. http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/visiting-san-diego-winter-2016.372021/
I made one for a few years, but it's out of date and as I mention in the thread, I don't think I could do it justice anymore. http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/visiting-boston-guide-summer-14-edition.182136/ Someone is free to steal my stuff if they want to update it.
Appreciate it...I'll grab my car and drop it at the hotel...then probably take SL1. That heavy, huh? I'm going to need to pack my luggage light!
