Those of you who have visited the Sam Adams brewery, what was your favorite offering? I'm visiting Mass and will be hitting Sam Adams and Trillium. Thanks in advance! Oh... and what do you recommend on tap at Trillium??
Sam Adams usually offers Boston Larger, the seasonal (I believe it is Octoberfest right now), and then a rotating "special" beer (you never really know what it's, but it's often something from the current variety pack). You get three 7oz samples at the end of the tour. Unfortunately, the only way to consume beer at the brewery is to go on a tour (or attend an event there). They don't sell pints and don't really have a tap room. I've been on the tour a LOT, and it's always a good time. They do fill growlers in the gift shop. Those are usually from their small batch brews and are worth trying.
Trillium also does not sell pints at the brewery. They do not do samples either ... It is just a retail shop. There is no way of knowing what will be available on a particular day too far ahead of time, as the selection changes constantly. Get whatever they have that day, it is certain to be amazing. Check their website and Twitter to check what is pouring and "up next" shortly before your visit.
I would go to the Sam Adams tour first (a bit out of the way), then head to Harpoon for their tour and enjoy some of their speciality beers in their beer hall along with a pretzel. From there head down to Row 34 for a late lunch and their killer draft list, then swing by Trillium for some growlers/bottles. Might be a bit ambitious, but you can pick and choose from that and have a great time.
