Is there any place left in the Boston area where they still refill growlers? Or is it a thing of the past now? I read somewhere that it is partly because craft beer has moved out of the industrial plots to set up in better city locations. Another reason seems to be that bartenders think it's to messy.
Most likely the fact even new breweries can utilize mobile canning now probably has passed the growler practice. The other issue being they can go bad quick and once it’s open you basically need to commit to potentially 64 oz. Since we all know recapping typically ends up a flat malty drink the next day. However, I’ve definitely forgotten about half a can pour the next day and tried it and that sucker still is quite carb’d. Sam Adams downtown may offer it but I’d message them first. Try harpoon too. Is rock bottom still in business? I think the days of a bar filling a growler in the city are long gone.
Cambridge brewing still offers growlers in the deli fridge behind the host stand, along with selected bottles. Generally they'll have a lot of the stuff that's on tap in growlers. Sometimes you'll see something crazy like a growler of blunderbuss. I definitely recommend sharing that one!
Mass also had that weird "breweries can only fill their own branded growlers" law. Did that ever get revisited/changed?
A little bit. They can fill unbranded growlers, but that's also at brewery discretion. Not many breweries were down with that, at least at first, but that was 5 years and a lifetime ago.
Winter Hill Brewing does growlers (32oz only I think). They did crowlers for awhile and then switched to glass. Remnant usually has crowlers in their fridge and Bone Up does cute little mini crowlers
So I’m sure there are other threads out there that address this, but fwiw, what is one to do with those leftover growlers?
Long Live does but if it's like Providence, not every selection will be available for growlers - only those where they still have kegs but sold out of cans.
I know it's not near Boston, but I am 99% Sterling Street Brewing is still filling growlers these days.
