Yeah, I know. Your post was clear. I only mentioned that the format was different to act as a disclaimer since my date inference could be wrong. I didn't want the reader to put total stock in my numbers.

FYI (to add to your knowledge) - There's still a small code at the base, and the large code above the shoulder (w/o the "enjoy before" preceding it). Here's the difference between your pic and my bottle stamp: The code in your pic has the 3 number day code, followed by the letter A, followed by 5 numbers and then the "P." The code on my bottle is (if my eyes aren't failing... even though they are... darn dot matrix) - the letter P, followed by 10 numbers, followed by the letter E.

So, although it's in the ballpark of that older case code pic, just separating the first three numbers to arrive at a day didn't give me 100% confidence that I was on target. But having done just that, the numbers seemed to work. If correct, my two beers were two weeks apart in age. What a pity - We all know how Boston Lager "falls off" in just a week.

I love topics like this 'cause it gives me an excuse to go beer shopping "for research" (yeah, I never really need an excuse, even to myself). And, you know, maybe I'll find something to buy, some beer or another.

One of the letters in that code also stands for the brewery, either Pennsylvania or Cincinnati, Ohio (I guess local MA products would also have a "B"). BUT I can never remember which it is and my old jpeg is no help - having both an "A" and a "P". Pretty sure the Cincinnati brewery's always been represented by a "C" but the old Schaefer brewery outside Allentown was "A" (Allentown) and now is "P" (Pennsylvania) ... or is vice versa? I gotta keep better notes ("Oh, that's easy, I'll remember that...") and file 'em better, too ("Is under "Freshness and Date Codes" or "BBC - Koch"?)

You, too, huh? I have a hard time reading my posts a lot, too - I'm afraid one day I'll break the BA forum's EDIT feature from overuse for those 15 minutes...
"No, that's not right...that sounds awkward...lemme add more info... and another parenthesis off-topic comment...that's the wrong year...forgot the s....14 minutes, oh, damn!"

Yup, that contributes to the above EDIT over-use. It's worse in beer stores, where I've been seen to put my (Beer Date Code) Reading Glasses OVER top of my regular glasses for even more magnification.
"Hmmm....Maybe if go out to my truck and get my spare pair, 3 glasses would make it legible!"

    Ackward? Bill the Cat-ism? :joy::rofl:

Sorry, just struck me funny.

(Or was it short for bass-ackward? -- keeps it beer-like )

Too late - fixed it already because...
... there are just some misspellings and typos that I can't "see" until after I've hit "POST REPLY"...

We can at least be thankful you didn't pick up any "snot" notes :sunglasses:

From your description of it being hoppier, I wonder if they were trying to make it stand up to age a bit better? In the NE forum people often talk about how (pleasantly) different a really fresh SABL is because the hops balance the malt sweetness a bit.

Might be interesting to taste them both at what would be a very typical shelf age. Maybe the new formula eventually reverts to tasting more like a fresh old one?

Ah, when it comes to cartoon cats, my #1 choice is Fat Freddy's Cat, replacing my preteen pick of Courageous Cat (and Minute Mouse). Real ones I avoid due to allergies. But why does my neighbor's cat w/4 kittens prefer to hang out under my deck?

Cats know when you're allergic -- I'm sure of it.

Didn't Bob Kane create Courageous Cat?:wink:

Okay... bring it back to beer -- long time closed brew-pub in the Illinois Quad Cities: *Black Cat Brewing. Even with my feline aversion I liked their beer -- and graphics.

    *Guess it was Blue Cat?

You’re better off just assuming it’s old rather than finding out just how old it is.

But you apparently found bottles that were packaged on Oct 10th; that is only 20 days ago.

Maybe the rest of us could get lucky too?

    Cheers!

Didn't you read the @zid review in post #170?

Apparently once you get past the cabbage it is a yummy beer!:stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks. Now that I have read it, it doesn't sound anything like the first iteration of the beer that I loved so much. Dammit.

It's NY only right now. If it comes to your state, try it with an open mind.

Chris, do you have any idea why the remastered SABL is New York only?

    Cheers!
