Most Marzens for me especially Ayinger, most any amber ale ever brewed, there’s exceptions but not many. For whiskey try Dalwhinnie 15 year old it’s got tons on caramel there, when your glass dries and you sniff it smells like candy.

Now I’ll make an exception to this, I think they’re from Transient Brewing from the Chicago Burbs, they make a chocolate and caramel stout that has literal chunks of both in it, had me licking the glass at the end. Best stout I’ve ever had

Now I love Ben and Jerry’s Salted Caramel Core ice cream too, I like toffee as well.

Makes sense, the same with IPAs as the hops fade it leans more malt forward and I can smell it before I taste it.

Oh wow. I had no idea this was happening. Like many, this is one of my first craft beers. Definitely the first as far as lagers go for me. I never buy it unless it's fall football season. But if I go to a barbecue or a party and someone has it I'll definitely give it a try for old time's sake. I'm definitely getting some when I go make a beer run today thanks to this thread.

But didn't Stone do this? I know Stone IPA does definitely taste different than it did years ago. And I remember seeing on message boards a few years back that they had changed their recipe. Not really changed but tweaked. I think a lot of other people do this. There's another big brewery that I'm thinking of that did this. I know one of my local breweries, Starr Hill tweaked a few of their recipes under new ownership. Actually, they're northern lights IPA is better than it was in the beginning. I used to hate it.

The thing is, money talks. If this is a failure they will go right back to the old recipe. Maybe this is their Coke 2 moment. one side note, crystal clear Pepsi was the bomb! They actually did a limited release a few years ago back and I bought every one every time I went into a store. I consider that and sift on it like a barrel aged stout!

    Go Clemson tigers tonight

If sales are way down, he probably saw a need for a reintroduction. 1984 was a long time ago, the markets more hops driven obviously, even Pils are challenging it with the hops. Doing nothing your losing, doing something might be a plus. Just stop brewing 89 kinds of beers that mostly suck, and narrow it to a core group and pay attention to them.

Oh boy here we go! Victory did this with Prima Pils to make it more "drinkable" and "session-able" and while I enjoy the new version I prefer the original, as do many it would seem.

Yep very fresh BL is surprisingly hoppy [for the style and/or when you are used to drinking it with a little age on it].

Yep the Stone IPA now is not the original.

    i hope it's retro, like @TongoRad also hopes for. I'm talking 80's.

I think you have hit the nail on the head. Remastered means nothing, or it can mean anything you want it to. What does improvements is our brewing system mean? That they are brewing the same amount of beer but with lower energy cost and less waste water. It does not say different ingredients just improved. Just a lot of hot air In my opinion.

Unfortunately stock price is not really a good indicator of company health. Tesla is not really a profitable company yet their stock was blowing up.

Not had a lager in a while but I always seem to enjoy one when I do. Going to bet its not much different. Prima Pils changed and its pretty much the same beer to me, very good.

    Enjoy

As the old saying goes: the proof is in the pudding.

But the statement of "brighter and easier drinking" sure sounds like a product change (e.g., recipe/brewing change) to me.

I suppose we should all wait and see.

    Cheers!

At least they didn't call it "re-imagined"!

In this case that’s very true, it’s a bit of semantics taken at a second glance I suppose. When I saw the first post, and I just assumed it’s a reformulation using perhaps something like more modern hops not available in the med 80s, or changing the malt profile. The sales aren’t that strong to cause any real grief like Coke took on changing what devoted lovers thought a perfect product. No real way to bugger this up unless it’s not enough change to notice there was a change or the beer just sucks. SA has brewed a lot of sucky beers over the years, but it seems worth the risk given event sales. I suppose with name branding reformulated was used instead of renaming to avoiding a head to head with itself with the Boston Lager.

God this is awful news. I consider boston lager better than probably 90% of the beers on the top 250 list. It's not trendy so it doesn't get the respect it deserves for being one of the best beers ever brewed IMO.

I assume by brighter they mean "juicier bro". What I love about boston lager is precisely the opposite, the old fashioned European hop flavors I get.

This sounds like when New Belgium "remastered" their Trippel. It was an authentic Tripel, now it's just another hoppy beer in their lineup. Sad! It was one of my favorites and go-to beers, along with their Abbey. Which we longer see around here.

Sales numbers puts you in the minority here. They’re losing sales volume to other newer beers using more modern ingredients, so I’m thinking it’s going to drink like a hoppy Pils. I didn’t like their Ranger stuff, the Boston Lager reminds me of an amber lager. Which is fine, but it’s a hoppy world right now, but I’m definitely curious where they push this.

Only way it’s ever gonna succeed is if they dry hop it with hyper new-world hops, throw in some oats to the mash, rouse the tank before they bottle it so there’s tons of suspended yeast and particulate. It would taste like shit but it’s all about how it looks on social media!

Enjoyed Boston Lager fresh at the brewery a few years ago and it was unreal. It was top notch, especially that fresh. I'll be curious what they do with it, but honestly, can't think of any "2.0" has been better than the original. See poor Prima Pils... :slight_frown:

I greet this news with a mixed reaction. It’s not my first go-to, but I do buy it when I’m nostalgic for New England and want something that is cheap but hits my tastes for both sweetness and hops.

I hope that this is more like trying to get back to the beer’s roots before it became a national brand, as a means of fighting the flavor attrition that happens when production is scaled and production costs are reduced. Maybe Budweiser needs to do something similar...

Is that like renewing ones vows? It's an admission before the eventual reckoning. So, how is the beer?
