I'll be traveling for my first time to Boston this coming week. Looking to get into some great beer! Of course planning on going to Jack's Abby. I'd like to know some of the best spots to buy a good selection of beer. I'm from southern GA so, based on seekabrew, some breweries I'd like to try that Boston supposedly has (who knows how quickly it's bought up) are:

AleSmith, Dark Horse, FiftyFifty, Jack's Abby, Prairie, Southampton and Troegs

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Nick

I haven't seen Prairie anywhere in Boston. Where are you staying?

Cool, had no idea. I picked some up when I was in Missouri in June and enjoyed it.

Alesmith bombers are pretty easy to find. Speedway Stout, Grand Cru, IPA, Horny Devil, X are the ones I have seen. Don't recall seeing FiftyFifty. I wouldn't bother with anything from Troegs or Southampton. Local brewers like Trillium, Mystic, Enlightenment/Idle Hands, Cambridge Brewing Company are putting out more worthwhile stuff than anything you will find on the shelves here from Troegs or Southampton. Any Troegs Nugget Nectar you come across would be old.

I've definitely seen a few varieties of 50/50 Eclipse at one of the Gordon's liquor stores

    What Kinopio said.

I would focus on tracking down Jack's Abby, Maine Beer Co.,Trillium, CBC, Night Shift over Troegs/Southampton. In general, the currently-available offerings from these brewers are superior to the currently-available Troegs/Southampton in Boston. It obviously depends on exactly what you can find.

    Hello
If you are looking for a great beer bar check out Stoddard's. Great draft beer lineup with many locals. Food good also. Great bartenders and service. Cheers!

The two times I have been to Stoddards the service was horrible. We were sitting at a table and not the bar so perhaps that made a difference. Even so, the last time it was a brunch and there were only about 8 people in the place and we still had to wait on everything and the waiter forgot a beer I had ordered. A buddy who was there another time also had very poor service. Beer was great though.

Lots of good suggestions already. I'll second Julio's as a great bottle shop. I'm personally partial to Redstones in Stoneham. Another great bottle shop.

As for breweries I haven't seen anyone mention Wormtown (located in Worcester). They make some great beers that are available at most MA bottle shops. Be Hoppy is a world class IPA, IMO. Check out Berkshire Brewing as well. I think their coffee porter is pretty amazing and considering the price it's a bargain.

    Have fun.

Nobody mentioned the Harpoon brewery. Great view, great pretzels and a boston beer institution.
