Just tried Equivalent Dose, gonna echo what others are saying here. The banana flavor is natural, not artificial. They nailed the flavor profile on this. Chocolate-covered banana soaked in bourbon. Well done BL. Not as good as OH Bananaversary (that beer is so weird because OH’s stouts are usually mediocre, but that one in particular is world class) but still very well done.

Enjoyed it today on draft when I got bottles. Definitely it was better than I anticipated.

Shared a bottle of the 2019 Fundamental Observation with a friend and man what a treat. Definitely world-class stuff.

Had Equivalent Dose tonight, for me, up there with Number Crunch for best BL release of 2019.

Had Equivalent on tap and that it was ok. Same standard middle of the road BL base with little to no banana flavor at all. I mean if you didn't tell me it had bananas in it I wouldn't have guessed it did. Luckily I traded all my bottles away before the hype fades.

Having it on draft, it's very surprising to say there is little to no banana flavor. I don't question you, but seems your pour was off. No idea what factors , maybe a new or old keg had consistency issues.

The last banana stout I had before Equivalent, was bakery banana bread a week ago. I wish that one had more banana.

Interesting, I thought it was plenty of banana, so maybe there's some variation or just different palates. I thought it was close to Other Half's Snowbirds VIP, minus the added sweetness of the coconut that Snowbirds has and the added barrel presence. It's not as thick but still has a better mouthfeel than most of the recent releases.

It could also be person to person variation too. There have been times at MTs preview tasti gs (bottle pours) where i detect no maple in a maple beer while my friend gets a ton. The opposite has happened with cinnamon as well where i get a ton and my friend doesnt. Banana seems to be the new adjunct of the week so maybe some people are more sensitive to it than others and we just havent figured it out yet?
Edit: didnt refresh the page when i wrote that so i didnt see 562s post but ya... Different palates etc.

I've tried several and this one probably had the least amount of banana in it which wasn't a good thing for me. I really enjoyed nanas which had a tons of banana and more sweetness which is what I enjoyed. Some guys don't want too much banana / sweetness so it would be perfect for them. Just a matter of preference.

I agree it sounds like you got a bad pour or just had a lower sensitivity because between the low fill pour, taster, full pour and bottle I've had to date, all have had great banana flavor. Bakery Banana Bread was a let down in my opinion as well.

I think if someone drinks a beer only wanting banana and sugar, they might just be better off eating a banana. Sweeten to taste.

Does anyone know if BL uses a different malt/grain bill for every beer or is it the same with these special releases?

I think it's a mix. I want to say Jam the Radar is based closely off Darkstar but in the case of Beer Geek Observation the grain bill was based off the Fundamental Observation combined with Beer Geek grain bills. There's certainly someone here who can correct or build on this. Either way they're tasty.

Space Trace's base came from German Chocolate Cake and if I remember correctly that one was very different than darkstar and FO. Haven't had german chocolate cake in years, do they still brew it seasonally and I've just missed it?

All of our fresh beers and Level I Stasis Project releases are unique recipes + malt builds.

Level II+ Stasis Project releases are -- generally speaking -- adjunct or finishing ingredient riffs on the Level I base recipes. Some quick examples:

    Darkstar November
    • Red Eye November
    • Jam the Radar
    • El Duende
    Fundamental Observation
    • Number Crunch
    • Roll For Initiative
    Ground State

Any chance you can throw some hints at a tasting room expansion finally happening? Or an updated membership option incoming?

We finally cleared our largest hurdle with the city a few weeks ago, so now we're working on inking contracts with our architect and contractor teams. We won't have a definite start date until those are locked in, but we figure the Tasting Room portion of the expansion should take about four months once we begin.

With regard to membership, I don't foresee changing very much in the near future. It's always seemed odd to me to lock the best products behind a paid access wall. Considering our current production capabilities and goals for growth, I think it's still more accommodating to ensure anyone who's interested in one of our beers has a fair shot in a public sale.

Assuming we can continue to host WOL without any major changes, I might play with granting full allocation access to a sale [for seven-day attendees aka Saving Throw, Level Up, etc.] instead of just the one guaranteed bottle. I'm intrigued by shipping and proxy options and how those tweaks to our established sale structure would affect the rest of our business, but there's much more research to be done on those topics.

    WOO HOO!!

But, but, but, BL has that nifty pilot system that small one-off member bottles could be made on. :grinning:

    Full allocation... yes please!
