Of course batches have variation. But given how subjective taste actually is, I find it odd and worth pointing out that for some reason, according to many on these forums, all beers seem to taste better, the rarer they are. It’s groupthink at work, that much is undeniable.

I agree that rarity/hype gets higher scores (not by me - I tend to rate rare/hypebeasts lower, especially cuz they're usually disappointments).

But in this thread specifically, you've replied to 2? 3? people who said they liked FO2019 over FO2020. Not sure how the rarity thing plays into that.

Especially since Lindsay already said they made fewer FO2020 than FO2019.

I haven’t made comparisons with specific vintages as much as I’ve made generalizations about the beer’s lineage as a whole. Also, it must be noted that I tend to do this as a means of satire.

I mean 2020 even has slightly lower ratings on Untappd to capture a wider audience’s reaction. You can argue all you want about “subjective taste”, but it appears a clear majority are noting this batch is worse. Given the last 5 years of FO (we’re not all newest of money), I fully expect 2021 to be a better year because BL will notice this also.

I opened a Prodigal Physics over the weekend and was not a fan. I haven't had a lot of Bottle Logic stuff, but this was by far the most disappointing. Oh well, you win some and you lose some.

I opened a Prodigal Physics over the weekend and was a fan. I haven't had a lot of Bottle Logic stuff this year, but this was not a disappointment. Not sure what people didn't like about it, found it to be mostly chocolate and vanilla with a little bit of subtle berry. It didn't scream neapolitan, but I found it overall quite enjoyable.

I had Distant Messenger this week and was totally blown away. Maybe because I had low expectations, not only for a "Golden Stout"...but also just in general for a beer with pineapple in it that isn't a berliner or some other sort of sour.

The caramlized pineapple character they imparted in that brew was intense and spot on. Plus the body was fairly substantial and the other ingredients definitely gave it a Hawaiian dessert sort of vibe, with maybe a side of coffee.

    Absolutely loved it!

I loved Distant Messenger too, but definitely couldn't have more than like 5-6oz at a time. I was incredibly surprised at how well the pineapple came through.

I didn't like Prodigal Physics because the berry taste was just off putting. It had a weird medicinal taste to me. Saying that, my friend I shared the bottle with loved it.

I wonder why they made so little of PiYW2020? I got my 2 bottles cause my wife loves that beer, maybe it got bumped for something else in the brewhouse?

Since it's starting to be that time of year again, I do wish they'd bring back The Spice Must Flow. Loved it when they bottled it a few years back

Space Jam and The Fall of Umibōzu are absolute treats. Really enjoyed both this weekend.

I made a stop at BL yesterday to pick up Picture If You Will and I was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon the Elvis sandwich inspired stout they have on for crowler fills (A Little More Action). I didn’t see any posts on social media about it. The banana and peanut are both on point. Little thin on the body, but that’s my only complaint. Delicious dessert stout.

Got an opportunity to open Space Jam this weekend and was not dissapointed. To me it was Jam the Radar mouthfeel/flavor with a coconut aftertaste that became stronger as it warmed up. Really loved it.

I really like the Chicago Hazy IPA’s with lactose at BL, problem is they hardly ever have them in 4 packs, have any of you found any other breweries that make something comparable that is available ? Thank you

Just had to crack a Umibozu (fell out of the fridge and leaked a little).

Did anyone else get a strong metallic smell? Tastes good and super thick. Just getting that off putting metallic smell that sometimes pops up in a stout. Fading a bit as I let it sit but it’s pretty potent.

Was the bottle standing vertically prior to opening? I hate that metallic smell in BA stouts but I don't usually get it from BL.

I finally had one of my 2020 FOs last night, and I guess I'm fairly in line with the consensus, although I'm not as disappointed by it, maybe having plenty of fair warning in mind.

Though the barrel is a little sharper, drier, and hotter, and the bean is a little more floral and berry-forward than past years, it's still world class.

When it warms, the barrel char emerges and it becomes less boozy, and closer to that classic brownie batter character of past versions. Still, it's definitely way more of a sipper than I remember any past year being, almost reminding me of the higher ABV variants, coming across as numbingly rum-like at times.

While I agree in some overly spiced cases...I think it sounds like it's a very minimal addition. Curious to see if this comes out more like a boujie PBJ.
