bottle priming straight from carboy

    I was thinking ahead about stouts to make in the future and I'll likely get ambitious and run out of kegs since I only have 2, and need to condition. I was thinking of a way to eliminate the bottling bucket, and unnecessary transfers / movement of beer to reduce potentials for oxidation / contamination. What if I 1) boil some sugar water and either distribute it to the carboy, or to the bottles directly? and 2) use CO2 displacement at a very low pressure (like 2 psi) and transfer straight from fermented to bottle? Anyone try this before? Thoughts? Critiques?

    Will you rely on siphoning from the carboy to your bottles, or do you have a spigot in the carboy? I tried siphoning once when bottling and found it to be awkward, especially when I lost my flow somehow and had to restart.

    The other concern would be how much trub you typically get in your fermentor and having it get too much into your bottles. If you add your priming sugar solution, you'll get the trub into the bottles because it will be in suspension for awhile.

    I've never added priming solution directly to the bottle, but it seems like it should work as long as you are accurate about equal distribution per bottle.

    Ya, I was thinking about that. It takes the option off the table for carbing to a prescribed volume. But without knowing exactly how much beer is in the carboy (roughly 5 gallons), it would be hard to distribute exactly to bottles. And probably be a pain too.

    There is a link posted here recently where someone was using a gunpowder measurer to prime the bottles with cane sugar, same dude brewing a batch a day. Other option, cheaper would be to mix your sugar solution and use a syringe to inject the solution into the bottles. Syringe is easy to sterilize and quite cheap. Tough to buy, pharmacies won't sell them to you unless you have a script, but go by an ecig store and they usually have them or will sell you one.

    I work in a pathology lab in a hospital. Syringes are easy to come by. That's a good idea and cleaner than pouring by measuring spoons.

    They sell 10ml oral syringes online pretty cheap and you don't need a script. I used them to give my twins vitamins when they were really young. One would fit into a bottle easily.
