    To all the locals,

I'm curious about the bottle sharing policy (i.e. non-Cantillon bottles) in the tasting area. Is it generally prohibited? Encouraged? Please share your experience(s) so I don't embarrass myself.

And since I'm on the topic, what's the likelihood of meeting Jean Van Roy in person on site?

    Thanks in advance!

hmmm I don't know. I already did some trades at cantillon but I don't know if they would appreciate doing a bottle share.

There's a big chance you will see Jean Van Roy. I saw him most of the time I visit cantillon. When would you come over?

Pere and fils are around a lot. Agreed with belvedere86 that I would be shy about doing that, but you could ask in advance -- and like bringing your own at a fancy restaurant, offer to pay corkage and share a taste with the staff. Even then, if they seem hesitant or cite licensing and legal issues, I wouldn't press it.

I apologize for the late response guys! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I imagined bringing a bottle of my favorite local California beer and sharing with the staff (or whoever else wants a taste). I surely wasn't going to make a big thing out of it; more like a gesture of appreciation. But yes, I will definitely ask in advance.

If you guys don't mind, I'd like to ask you guys a few more questions. Will PM shortly!

    Cheers!

I'm not a local, but I was there a few weeks ago and frankly I'd feel embarrassed if I was part of a bottle share there. Seems misguided and disrespectful.

Same here. Was there earlier this month and if I brought bottles, I'd give them to employees to drink with no expectation of anything in return.

I've done it, but most of the time the staff are too busy to sit and enjoy. I find other breweries are up for a tasting though. I've hung out with Tilquin a couple times (usually when his kids aren't there he'll share). Blaugies also are up for sharing if the dining room isn't packed!

I've visited breweries in Germany and given them my home-brew as a present, not to share, but for them to have as a gift of appreciation. I think giving a bottle as a gift to say thanks for being such great guys, etc, is ok, but demanding they drink it with you... uncool. It's all in how you present it. If you say it humbly enough and in sincere graditude, I don't see how that's bad. When I've done that at breweries, I've often gotten free samples of bottles from them in response. As long as you decline their free offers at least once, saying "oh no, I couldn't," then it doesn't look like your giving them some cheap-ass beer in hope of getting some free swag or beer to sell later.
