Hello all... Friend of mine just moved up there from VA. She is not a craft beer person but I want to see if there are some great/rare beers that I can ask her to get and bring back when she comes home. In VA, I'd go to a nice wine and bottle shop or possibly directly to a craft brewery. Any shops you guys could point me to for her? Cheers!

If she has access to a car I'd have her go to Champane's in Warren, or Cloverleaf or Holiday Market in Royal Oak. Both cities are adjacent to Sterling Heights, so the drive isn't too far.

HopSlam is the biggest recent release that I can recall, but it's all long gone. What styles do you like?

Oh yes she has a car and seems to already know a little about getting around the area. As for styles... I know it is late in the season but BA stouts and Imperial Stouts. But honestly, I'd take those and other DIPA's and Belgians that I can't get down here in VA.

Looking at Seekabrew.com we seem to share a lot of breweries, so the pickings are slim for any Michigan brewery recommendations. However, you don't get any Perrin, Greenbush, Short's Brews, Griffin Claw or Odd Side Ales and those would be the ones that she could pick from that should be good stuff. I can't think that any have 'rare' beers out right now to recommend them, although on second thought I saw a BBA Barleywine from Odd Side at my store recently, and it was in the same price category for a 12 ox. bottle. Since you like bourbon barrel-aged beers, I'll also recommend Arcadia's Shipwreck Porter. It's usually fairly easy to find because it's $8 per 12 oz bottle and not in high demand because of that, but it's a good one.

Take a look at the Short's bottle release link for their specialty beers and see if any of them interest you. https://www.shortsbrewing.com/2016 bottle-release-schedule/ Peachy Pom Pom in bombers is the latest to be released this week, so don't look any farther down the list than that one. All of these specialty offerings are great beers, but they don't stay on store shelves very long and maybe Uncle Steve's Irish Stout will be the only one she can find. (Peachy Pom Pom, if you like sour beers, is apparently flying off the shelves, as I couldn't find it at either of my favorite stores, and it may be difficult to find.)

Man this is all great information. I'll sort it out and look up those places and beers and send her the info. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Means a lot. Cheers!

If your friend doesn't want to go to out of the way, I would recommend Zetouna's. If she is in Sterling Heights, just tell her to take M-59 west and get off at the Rochester Rd exit. Then go south over the overpass and it is on the left hand side. If you Google Zetouna's Facebook, you can see some of the recent brews that came in. They have all the local Michigan brews you could want. Not sure how rare you would be after, but if she asks Jack, I am sure he can help her out.

Zetouna's only gives rare/allocated releases to their regulars called them last year about SMS release said I needed to come in and put my name on the list, showed up an hour later and at first told me no list existed and then it was all the SMS was taken based on the list. Needless to say never went back into that store, one of the few stores that give me such an attitude looking for an allocated release. Liquor book would be a better choice but sometimes their price's can be be high, called them about SMS last year and they didn't have it but could try to get it for me and called back a couple of days latter with a 4 pack.

Since Liquor Book is on Mound Rd, she could hit Liquor Book, Champane Wine Cellars and Holiday Market within a half hour of each other.

The Liquor Book is my main store. They do price their limited stuff very high but it's right across from my house and the guy who owns it/works there is really cool so I don't mind paying the extra $2-3 a bottle for the crazy stuff and save the drive.

Put together a list of places and beers for her. I'm not looking for the rarest things. Just some good solid BBA stouts and imperials and and IPA's that I won't get down here in VA. These places all look good. Thanks again!

Brandon is a great guy....store has been building a solid foundation since it opened! I second the pricing. I don't mind paying more for great customer service, and a solid selection. Also handles limited releases like a champ.
