Heading to Austin for some work trying at the beginning of April. I'll be staying at the Holiday Inn right by the Highland Mall. It looks like there's a Spec's within walking distance, but is there anything else that is pretty close that is worth checking out? I won't have a whole lot of free time in the evenings, so the closer the better.

Quickie Pickie and Whichcraft both have good selections.

Which Craft is the only true bottle shop in Austin but it will require a trip across town.

That Airport Specs you're going to be close to has a good selection just beware of old beer. Neighborhood is slightly sketchy too.

    Have fun!

Specs airport is pretty good. Sunrise Minimart, HEB Hancock, and HEB Mueller are all within a 10 minute drive. I wouldn't be walking around the area you are staying in too much after dark.

Thanks for the feedback... I didn't realize that was a shady area. I didn't get to pick where I'm staying which kinda sucks.

I guess it's safe to assume there isn't any good beer bars close by then?

Pinthouse Pizza is fairly close and is fantastic.

To be fair, I would not be concerend about walking around that area at night. I would not even think twice about it and have not really ever heard of issues with people walking at night.

Plenty of great bars/restaurants close by: Black Star Co-Op, Draught House, Pinthouse and Billy's on Burnet. All of these places are within 3 miles of the Highland Mall area.

Thanks for the info! I'll be in company vehicle, so I'll have to keep the drinking pretty light and as close to the hotel as possible, but it looks like I have a few good options

Aside from Uber/Lyft, you could also take the bus or rail to many of those places (http://www.capmetro.org/default.aspx). The rail stops right outside Black Star, but has more limited operating hours.

I used to live there-ish. I second all recomendations.

It's safer to walk around there than 6th street after dark.

Oh and I lived in an ungentrefied part of inner city chicago, so I know something about watching for sketchies.
