From Where? Stewarts is up in Bear and Iron Hill is in Wilmington. If you are going 295 to 495 to 95, it would be a little bit of a back track to get to Iron Hill Wilmington, but from 95 to RT1, Stewarts right off the highway. You could then hit DFH Brewery in Milton on the way down.

Not sure if Fordham and/or Dominion do growlers. No Growlers at Bars in Delaware, only breweries/brewpubs.

Disagree about the tolls. As a Wilmington native and a former UD student who used to practically live at State Line liquors, here is a nice tip. Go on I-95 South and exit before the toll onto 896 North into Newark. Make a left onto Route 4 until it will dead end onto Elkton Rd....make a left then onto Elkton. State Line will be a few minutes down the road on your left side. Avoid the hassle and the expense of the toll there. Actually, this route can be used for trips further south in either direction and never pay a toll there. I literally have never driven through that toll plaza in either direction.

The law dgs is referring to (the one described in the blog he linked to) is the one governing PA residents. We are not allowed to have alcoholic beverages in our possession in PA on which state taxes have not been paid. So if you buy out of state and bring it home to PA you can get busted.

The laws you have to worry about are those that govern interstate transportation of alcohol since you will be driving through a few states. (I am assuming MI does not have a law governing how much alcohol you can take back home with you.) One problem is that every state has a different set of laws but in general a moderate amount of alcohol can be transported *through* a state. Where you may run into trouble is if you are stopped for some other reason and found to have a large amount (whatever that may be).

I am curious. I can't recall hearing/reading of any distinction between transporting beer INTO vs. THRU PA. Can you point to where this info can be found? Though quite some time ago, I only knew of one person who got busted bringing alcohol across the PA border - she was not a PA resident.

e.g., Section 9.11, part (b) (5). It is illegal to transport alcolhol *through* PA without the proper licenses. (Which I assumed the OP does not have.)

The blog you linked to discusses only PA residents. It would be possible for the OP to think that he's not at legal risk because he is just passing through. Agreed that the end result of the two laws is the same, it is illegal to enter PA with Alcohol. But law being enforced (if enforced at all) is different. Pedantic distinction I realize, but one thing I've learned from interacting with lawyers is that they earn their fees out of worrying about such differences. Bottom line is that it is illegal to bring alcohol in or through PA if not properly licensed, etc.

way to make the OP paranoid. nobody actually enforces that. and if you were the unlucky sob that proves that it has been enforced in the past, then that is some shitty bad luck. =)

Note: PA is not unique in having laws about transport of alcohol into or through the state. It would also be easy for the OP to think it is only in PA that he has to worry about being illegal.

The PA State Police Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement:
"Investigations are generally conducted through undercover surveillance of liquor and beer retail outlets in neighboring states."

While it may not be very common, it does happen. I'd rather give the OP a heads up - some knowledge may reduce their chance of becoming the next "unlucky slob".

I could not speak specifics for other states, but did write:
" I believe some other states have limits on amounts, but PA allows none."

Others are free to post a heads-up for other states. (I can't put my finger on it now, but limits on the amount allowed for transport into NJ was posted some time ago. )

State Line is one of the few silver linings in my first-born's choice of U Del over Penn State. Sign-up for their club on-line for 10% off.
