So my mom is taking a little trip to the big apple in a week, and is awesome enough to have agreed to check out a bottle shop or two for me. I would like to know which shops are the best to visit in the city, since she will probably only have time to make it to one, maybe two.

She's staying in the 9th Ave, 53rd St area, so closer is better. But will be venturing around the city so further options may work too. Thanks!

Hate to break the news to you but there are no bottle shops in the 5 boroughs. She will need to travel to New Jersey or the Northern Suburbs to get beer.

Just kidding, this is a frequent topic on this forum and thought I would give an answer that hasn't yet been given to any previous posters. Someone will be along shortly to give you the birdseye lowdown.

Cool thanks, I'll check out that site. From my searches, it seems New Beer Distributors on the lower east side may be the best option. I'll check it out on the map and see if she may be going in that direction.

i would encourage your mom to check out whole foods bowery, top hops, or good beer instead. new beer is a warehouse that can get hot during the summer, that does not remove old/outdated product, gouges on prices, and engages in general fuckery.

I'm sorry to be presumptuous but if your mom isn't in to craft I would suggest top hops or good beer, maybe WF Bowery. They were always very helpful to me. Avoid new beer for the reasons franch said, especially if your mom isn't in to craft.

I think his mom is doing some shopping on his behalf - not buying for herself, if I'm understanding correctly.

You'd probably be able to get some more specific help if you share what you're looking for. Do you want your mom to be able to bring back growlers of NY-area brewed beers? Do you want a broad selection of NE-specific beers, or a specific beer you can't get? What do you want her to "check out" for you?

You're correct, she's shopping on my behalf. Mainly looking for a broad selection of stuff I can't get down here. I have yet to work on a specific list, as this plan just came up. But will probably include some impy stouts & sours.

Thanks for the tips so far. Top Hops, WF, & Good Beer all sound like good stops.

I'm a New Beer shopper myself, but there is great divide over the place (though I wouldn't buy any hoppier IPAs there). That said, they are much more of a warehouse than a shopper-friendly store, and if your mom is shopping for you, I certainly wouldn't recommend she go there. Top Hops or Good Beer are probably even better choices than WF, as the WF staff, even at the better stores, can be hit-or-miss as far as knowledge goes.

It's been posted a bunch of times, but in case you missed it, use this resource to figure out what you're missing where you're at: http://www.seekabrew.com/distro/index.html

Definitely recommend Top Hops, place is great, and very accessible even to those not into craft.

Is Allagash Curieux & any of the Alesmith Speedways easily attainable up there?

AleSmith is all over the place - WF Columbus Circle and Bowery should have whatever you're looking for (X, IPA, Speedway Stout). I haven't seen any of the barrel-aged AleSmith beers here, though.

I have definitely seen Curieux around, but you'd probably want to call ahead to specific shops to see if they have it in stock. Definitely available at times, though.

Be careful about Whole foods Bowery because the sun lands on those bottles like crazy.

I'm curious if any of the bottles have popped from all that sunlight yet, and if so, how frequently.

Sorry if this wasn't clear but what I meant was that I presume his mom doesn't know much about craft and the staff at Good Beer and Top Hops can help her out so she can get what the OP wants.

yeah, this is probably true -- there's one guy at WF bowery that's great but plenty that aren't.

if she goes to new beer she'll end up with a green tea IPA from two years ago and a bargain $35 BCBCS. :slight_frown:

I would definitely suggest either Good Beer or Top Hops as the best place for her to go.

It always gives me warm fuzzies when "New York City" is used interchangeably with "Manhattan." Luckily there aren't any good places to buy beer in any of those other boroughs.
