I'm not saying it's common at all. But I'm also not starting a thread if I see it.

It really ticks me off when I grab a sixer of a certain brew, only to find out someone has "subbed" the other beers in. If I wanted those beers, I would have bought those beers. Assholes.

They put all 6 Two Hearted in the Blue Moon carton and bought it, then put 6 Blue Moons in the Two Hearted carton and left it stranded. I guess I wasn't clear enough. Store loses big time.

Doing this qualifies as theft by deception in Ohio. I've charged people for it a handful of times depending on the severity. People take FBS ($12/4 here) and put six bottles of it into a $9.99 six-pack. That's a theft $8.01.

Am I the only one going to admit that I am one of the those people who "steal" a beer and put it in my create a six? Heres an ingenious idea...dont put the create a six shelf in the direct middle of the craft beer department.

I read somewhere that the theft angle is why DFH puts those yellow caps on 120 min, WWS, etc - if someone was try to slide one of those in a 60 minute sixer chances are that the clerk will notice.

You guys are all missing the main point here: MURDER. No, seriously. Those missing bottles were murdered.

In the OP's case, pulling beers from off-limit 6 and 4 packs could be ignorance or willful neglect, but either way it sucks for the buyer wanting to get that sixer. The biggest problem I've encountered is when a dishonest customer exchanges more expensive beer with cheaper beer. The worst for me was getting home and finding four of my six Bell's Expedition Stouts were in fact Bell's Amber. Now, Bell's has neck labels help differentiate brands, but I still check my six-packs before I get to the register.

Is it possible that a store employee wanted to try the beer before investing in a 4/6 pack?

Yup. This is only for the really really high ABV beers they make though. I've actually never even seen 120 or WWS in a store yet. I think the stores should take it upon themselves to mark the mix a six bottles though.

I'm not sure what Wegmans' policy is on that, and considering I saw maybe 5 or 6 beers missing, I'm betting it was someone being an asshole.

At my Wegmans, the mix-a-six section says something like "if you don't see what you want, ask an associate" which I've always taken to mean that they're willing to give you something from a pack and then put the rest on the mix-a-six section. At least at my store, I don't think they decide what to put in the mix-a-six section based on price, I've seen cheap and expensive beers on there. I think they just put on whatever and keep a variety, unless it's something super-special like BCBS or DFH 120min or something.

I don't think I've seen that actually, but if that was the case, then why wouldn't they put the rest of the pack in the mix section? I almost picked up a 4 pack of DirtWolf that was missing a bottle.

My store just assumes it is mixed, checks bottles and scans each one. Are people here talking about places that allow mix a six for a fixed price? Never liked that idea. Felt shady one time I went to such a place, and instead of buying a 6 pack of Stone IPA for 14.99, I put the bottles into a mix a 6 holder for 10.99 flat price.

Stone IPA for $15? That's ridiculous. It's a great beer but I wouldn't pay more than maybe $11 for it. And yes, I'm pretty sure it's a flat rate. They put the individual bottle prices there but they're all the same price. I think they do that so you don't have to buy all 6.

a lot of the beers in the single 12oz bottles are past the "enjoy by" date. I've considered swapping an older bottle with a bottle of the same but from a fresh 6pack, but haven't done it yet
