So I'm flying to visit my bf in Chicago next week and would like to check out bottle shops near LAX - can anyone recommend me some? I don't want to have to drive too far out of the way. I'm coming from Ontario.

Whole foods el segundo and beverage warehouse are both very close to LAX

I've been to BW a half a dozen times and have never really seen anything. Am I missing something?

I don't think you are. I work near LAX occasionally and went their upon recommendation. Much prefer the WF in el segundo, but seeing as it was right by LAX I thought I'd mention it.

It's a solid place if you want to get stocked up for a party, but in terms of limited releases... yeah, they don't get much different than most other places. They'll have their pliny in the front

Haha good to know. I went this weekend (which I know isn't the best) and I was just confused as to why I went. WF ELS is huge, but I've had weird experiences there, including when someone working there pretended there was nothing in the back when there was.

Whole Foods El Segundo. Make sure to take a lap around the entire store. They got bottles in several spots.

I've had that experience, too. I don't think it's anything malicious, I just think they have a lot of regulars now and it doesn't seem they have a consistent protocol for allocating their limited beers. I kinda wish someone would step up and take charge of that cuz right now it seems you get a different answer from everyone you ask and it's a shame b/c (other than not cleaning out their tap lines) they are an awesome beer spot.

I say skip BW and go here anyway. Same or better selection (with WAAAY more cold beers to choose from, although if you're driving to Ontario that may not be important) AND they have 20+ beers on tap and you can order food. BW ain't got shit on that.

Depending what day and time he's coming in, ESBC is also very near by. They have a tiny tap room with not much going on but you can get growler fills and then go across the street to the original Rock & Brews and eat expensive food and drink good craft beer.

Adding to ESBC: Plenty of bottles there too. Highly recommend grabbing a bomber of Hop Tanker if it's in the fridge.

I work at LAX and would have to say WF El Segundo and ESBC would be your best bet. I'll bring my ESBC growler to work and get filled up and pick up some bottles. WF's you have to ask whats in the back. Hit or miss. I think most places are like that these days with all the good stuff being held in the back. The LB location is cool but HB is not. I guess you just got to know the beer dude to get the good stuff.

I'm not a huge fan of WF just because it is a bit of a hassle. You go in aimlessly to ask someone what they have in the back and end up standing around forever a while for someone to show up.

Much prefer the whole smaller shop + instagram way. It is nice that the folks at WF Newport Beach maintain an instagram though, wish the El Segundo one did as well.

Not a fan of WF El Segundo, much prefer Beverage Warehouse, all depends on timing though. Like ESBC.

What would a smaller store do to increase your chances of finding anything that isn't picked over by locals already?

It's like, why try helping someone who just simply doesn't want help?

I remember this poster asked where they could find Cantillion and that same line of they'll drive ANYWHERE in SoCal for it. Lucky enough Ramirez's new place opened the same day and had cases upon cases of that stuff, but like any loons on the shelf, they weren't going to be there long. The suggestion was made to go now and get some. She simply replied with "I'll go this weekend" as if time wasn't a major factor.

It's like she reads some hyped up article and then gets obsessed with tracking down that oh so rare, and obviously better than any other shelf beer. But has a short attention span.

I'm flying into LAX in about 2 weeks with a 3 hour layover (arrive 6am on a Weds., connecting flight departs at 9:30) Would a quick trip to the WF El Segundo be doable if I uber'd there when they open at 7am? Google Maps tells me it's 10min. but I've been screwed by maps before so looking for some local knowledge. Not sure how the morning traffic situation is at that time either. Ideally would like to get back to the terminal by 8 to pack whatever I get and check in.
