    Goof afternoon all,

This is my first post as I can't find the answer online and wondering if you all could help me out?

My thoughts are to do the majority of the fermention in the primary as I don't see the huge benefits of using a 2nd fermenter. This being said, I am using 5 gallon glass carboys and I do intend to dry hop with a hop sock.

As I will be required to transfer to my SS conical for bottling, could I transfer to this 4 days earlier than usual to dry hop and then bottle from the same vessel.

I am guessing that further separation will ocure and it will also be easier to remove the hop sock from this vessel when finished. I do appreciate that some of what has dropped could be stired back into the wort yet the design of the conical shape and gentle stirring should minimise the risk of this.

    Would you reccomend this?

    Many thanks

    Phil

You're fermenting in glass carboys and then transferring to a stainless conical for bottling? Why?

Wouldnt adding the priming sugar and mixing around throw up all the cake at the bottom? Also my brewing spatula won't fit inside the glass carboy. I also like the fact that I can add a hose to the steel conical and a brewing wand and their is no mess.

    What he said.
If you have a conical. It's your friend. USE IT.
Keep your glass for sour's and high gravity stuff.

Yes. There are two ways around this...
    - use a bottling bucket and add the sugar solution there
    - add (dry) carbonation drops/dry sugar directly to the bottles

But either way, a SS conical is a superior fermenter.

Many thanks for the replies, I will transfer to this and add the hops and then bottle in 4 days.

    Thanks again.
