I just bought a bottle of Hog Heaven but didn't bother looking at the bottling code. Turns out, the code is "11:36260", which I think means the beer is already 4+ years old. I'm pretty sure the storage conditions at the store were good so it has essentially been aging 4 years. I'm going to drink it tonight but wanted to get others' thoughts on what I can reasonably expect to get out of the beer (I've never had it, either fresh or aged). I guess this also serves as a PSA to pay attention to bottling dates. Thanks.

It's a very hoppy barleywine so I personally wouldn't age it. What did you pay for it?

I paid $10 for it. Not outrageous but didn't think I'd be getting a seriously aged bottle!

I wouldn't be surprised if it's showing signs of oxidation. Let us know how it goes?

So I poured it and...not bad. I didn't really seem to get much oxidation, at least not any paper/cardboard flavors. I also didnt get much of the dried fruit or toffee flavors that oxidation can bring though.
It still had a lot of carbonation and good lacing. The smell was still heavy hops so I can't even imagine what this was like when fresh. The first taste was still very hoppy with a little caramel, kind of like the old Brach's caramel chews. As it warmed up, a got a little bit of licorice, like the Good & Plenty candy, and a little of the pine.
I drank it over a long session, over an hour+. Even though I prefer sweeter beers and English barleywines to American Barleywines, I liked this. My guess is that the hops would have been ridiculously overpowering when fresh, at least according to my taste, but that a little aging works well for this. I think this was a little one note and I got almost no individual fruit flavors that are supposed to be there. But as a mistake on my part, I could do a lot worse.

It is stupid hoppy when fresh, actually more bitter than Maharaja in my opinion, so four years were good to tame it a little.
