Forgive me if this has been mentioned/discussed already (I searched through Google and the new Forums) but does Boulevards Dark Truth have Brettanomyces in it? The 12oz bottle I had last night had a best-before date of 4/28/2013 and as it warmed I'm 99% sure that Brett was taking over this beer, especially on the nose.

Anyone else have experience with this? I am NOT looking to pile on Boulevard (as they seem to have some issues in this department) but I can see no where where 1.) Brett is supposed to be in this beer and 2.) another drinker has come to the same conclusion.

Makes me scratch my head, especially since I don't care for wilds/Brett beers and I've only had about 6 Brett-ed beers in my life. I'm not the most experienced with Brett.

I'll have to try one tonight, but I don't think I've tasted any brett in the ones I bought a couple of months ago in OK City. But I wasn't looking for brett, plus since I love brett beers it wouldn't have been an off taste for me.

Possibly tainted/infected? It has Belgian yeast, which I remember distinctly because I dislike that Belgian funk in stouts even though I love it in IPAs.

Thats my thought. It could have been the Belgian yeast, I'm no expert, but it was definitely funky.

yea, i get kind of a vinegar tinge to it, but probably because i'm not used to stouts with belgian yeast strains...i get similar flavors from most of 21st amendments speciality beers

I've bought a couple of 4-packs of this (great beer) and I've never picked up any Brett. It definitely has belgian yeast in it, which gives a bit of a fruity lean to an imperial stout, but I don't believe it's supposed to contain Brett.

It's entirely possible Brett crept into a batch of it - they definitely have had the problem before with their Imperial Stout. See if you can find another 4-pack with a totally different bottling date. If it's the same then you're likely mistaking the Belgian yeast for Brett. If it's not the same, then you probably got an infected pack.

I might do that. Dark Truth is actually pretty hard to find around me though, and I'm sure that the place I bought it from has only that one batch. I have a second bottle, I'm going to hold onto it and see what happens.

I really doubt there is any Brett added.

On a related note, I cracked a Harvest Dance Wheatwine last night and it definitely had something odd going on. Very bretty taste to it and could hardly pour a few drops without it foaming to the top of my glass.

Last month, I opened a corked & caged 750ml bottle from the first release of Dark Truth--completely flat :slight_frown:

It started out like Belgian candi-sugar tartness/sweetness and Belgian yeast but I could have sworn it was Brett by the end.

I'm thinking its just the Belgian yeast you are picking up on.

Its funky. Wasn't a fan my first go round with this one. Have one aging to try again later.

Conversely I quite like Belgian Yeti and Hell Hath No Fury which are also Belgian stouts though I have seen HHNF classified as a Belgian Strong Dark. Too roasty though.

God I guess I could be wrong...once my mind convinced me of it it was hard to taste anything else.
