I should lead off with the fact that I may be preaching to a very minute crowd here...but there are guaranteed a few BAs who pour their dark ales over a splash of bourbon. Cause why the f*ck not?!

My recent pairing (since working in a brewery, and wanting spice up all those free beers and low-fills you eventually stock up) has been simply some fresh Blackout Stout over a smidge of Bulleit (great mixing bourbon, and pretty great on it's own). Nothing flashy. Tastes amazing.

If you partake, what's your concoction?

I sometimes pour a splash of Jim Beam Black into a glass of Yuengling Black & Tan. Adds a lot of body and flavor to an otherwise mediocre brew. I would never ruin a good beer with such experimentation, however.

That sounds like something that sounds like a good idea around the fifth or sixth round. I don't remember doing it but probably have.

I've done random imperial stouts with bourbon, usually buffalo trace. Narwhal is pretty good with it.

I will have to try this, never have but I can see how it would enhance some flavors, etc.

Jack Daniels and Guinness... I tried making my own Big Bad Baptist one night (late night) and while it didn't work I've kept mixing these up from time to time. I use about 2oz jack per bottle of Guinness.

Bulleit is an amazing bourbon for those whose have not tried it...at $22 bucks a bottle its a no brainer. btw the correct pronunciation is bullet...right?

Haven't added bourbon to a beer, but have occasionally done a bourbon wash on my glass prior to pouring. I only do it with stouts I've had a few times that are thinner and need a kick.

Pour yourself a little bourbon and sip it like you normally would. When you are finished, pour the stout into the glass and the traces of bourbon add a nice little kick.

pardon the length, minimal & fairly random, it's something i dabbled in. however, never kept very good track of the experiments. 99% of it has fallen into a couple of categories.

there's the instances what i've poured just isn't doing it for me or is uninspiring so let's try adding X. the other common situation that comes to mind is with large format bottles, secondary pours i've put a dab of spirit in the base of the glass before refilling with the beer selection. what i'm usually looking for there is contrast. in both of those categories it's been pretty random & not planned in advance. the 1% i left open, there's been a couple of times i've started off with : i'm going to add X beforehand & known / planned exactly what.

i would add, for me this has been tiny volumes, what amounts to drops or a very minimal "splash". the spirit i've had good results with the most hasn't been a whiskey at all - it's actually Doorly's XO rum ($14-19/btl) that seems to work well with almost any dark beers i've tried.

bourbons & ryes i've used multiple times include:
    • Old Forrester 100
    • Old Weller Antique
    • Pikesville (rye)
    • Elijah Craig Barell Proof
    • Eagle Rare Single Barrel.
results have been good but imho mixed (no pun intended). in my mind there's only been a time or 2 adding spirit has made a beer i really wasn't feeling - more likeable. adding spirit has given some of those examples something different or maybe slightly more interesting but hasn't ever turned anything i was ready to walk away from into something i couldn't turn away from.

however. there's been some really good beers i liked as is that i've added spirit and the combo has worked fantastically. a couple that i remember off the top of my head were: Boulevard's Imperial Stout with Coconut with a splash of Doorly's XO rum. De Molen's Spanning & Sensatie with a few drops of Doorly's XO rum was also very good. De Molen's Hel & Verdoenis with drops of Pikesville rye was delicious too.
