My uncle is coming in town and loves Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale, and I am going to get him one, but I also want to show him something to give him that next step. What's a great, easy accessible Boubon Barrel aged beer?

    (I line in Louisville Kentucky)

BA Boris from hoppin frog, I'm not sure if its whiskey or bourbon but it should easy for you to find, and imo pretty tasty.

Bluegrass Brewing Co. in East St. Matthews does a number of Bourbon Barrel aged beers you might check out.

BBAs tend to be seasonal...and by that, I mean more towards fall/winter. Many are out of stock/season, BUT if you have a good beer store, you can find some (pricey) to give the Uncle a treat!

If I were visiting I'd expect Kentucky bourbon and not Kentucky bourbon barrel aged beer.

I would recommend going to Louisville Beer Store and Old Town Wine & Spirits (in that order) to find something that is Bourbon Barrel Aged - the folks at Louisville Beer Store were very knowledgeable and helpful when I visited.

Since that beer is not a stout, you might want to find out whether he likes stouts at all first thing.

Overall, I'd suggest following the advice of dbrauneis and exploring some of the Bluegrass non-stout options, and/or talking to the beer guys at the two stores he mentions.

Something from New Holland? Like Dragon's Milk.

Wow Bourbon Barrel ale from Kentucky Brewing has got to be the worst BA beer I have ever had.
I had one for the first time last week. (I needed to loyalty point) I took a little sniff, not bad I thought. Then a healthy swig and as I put my glass down I said rather loudly. "this is HORRIBLE". You guys in KY must be hard up for BA ale as this offering is just horrid.

http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/430/18698 to make sure we are talking about the same beer.

The BA Stout was actually pretty good.

Agreed with Gene. Probably the worst Bourbon Barrel beer I've ever tasted. Never will touch it again.
Smells ok; taste - forget it.

If he loves Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale he will love anything that says barrel on it.

Can you guys get Schlafly beers there? Their bourbon-barrel imperial stout (around $11 bucks for a 750) is pretty tasty...if not, I second the Dragon's Milk suggestion above. Dunno how soon your uncle will be there, but both would be dead simple to trade for if you can't get 'em locally.

Yea we have Schlafly here. not sure if I could get that one though. I'll check though. Thanks.

Everyone's hating on Kentucky Bourbon Barrel, and while I know it's not the greatest, it's enjoyable, and definitely beats Dragons Milk, that stuff tastes like rubbing alcohol and armpit.

Okay, you may have access to Quaff Bros Brown Chicken Brown Cow since it seems you somewhat close to Ohio. I got it as a trade from BA deadonhisfeet (he lives in Florence, KY). It is an awesome bourbon barrel beer for sure.

Any BA beer will be better than KBBA. However, that was the first beer I ever heard of being BBA a year or two ago and it did get me into it. Now every beer has a BBA version.

The correct answer is Schlafly bourbon barrel ale. NOT the imperial stout, it's awful (for the style). I'm not sure how much you'll find on the shelf of the Schlafly since it is seasonal but it's the perfect next step without jumping into the imperial expensive stuff.

I agree with the Kentucky Bourbon stout. Give that a shot, its not bad. I enjoyed it.
