A buddy of mine that distills for himself gave me a charred, American oak barrel he had aged his bourbon in for 8 months. 5 gallon barrel. Outside of the obvious imperial stout/porter/barleywine what else might be interesting to put in this puppy?

To me only a malt-forward beer works well as a BBA beer. People put IPAs and DIPAs in bourbon barrels, but I personally did not like that flavor combo when I tried one.

The malt-forward styles that you mentioned are the most popular, but you could also consider beers in the bock category, or think about the Belgian dubbels, triples and quads.

You're lucky to get a used 5-gallon barrel, so have fun with it.

EDIT: How can an individual distill for himself. Is there a new 'homebrew' law that applied to spirits now?

Sssshhhhhhh it is the local dont ask dont tell policy..Hey NSA you getitng this?

I like the bock or double bock idea. Have not had great success with lagers but I used the White Labs Cry Havoc recently and did a killer clone of ElCamino Black Ale.
