To me this year's line-up was following the trend and catering to pastry stout fans. Right in the wheelhouse for drinkers that enjoy the style. Prop '17 was a line in the water to see if the people would bite. They did so the whole lineup went full pastry this year. Goose Island is giving the people what they want.

You’re not helping the anti-hype crusade one bit! At least we’re still making some headway with Bramble and Midnight Orange.

I was unimpressed by both the draft and bottle version. IMO it's a nice flavor but there's not much complexity to it. I definitely finished the bottle but it was... a lot...

I think what I can safely say, having had all of them a couple times at this point, is that there is no legendary BCBS this year. I don't think people will look back on any of these variants as being one of the best BCBS variants of all time.

They've done Prop 18, Bramble and Vanilla before.
I don't see wheatwine or coffee barleywine as pastries. Regular and Reserve are just normal barrel aged stouts.
They only thing that could be considered as an extra pastry stout is Midnight Orange, which if you're just considering an adjunct as pastry then sure. I don't think they went out of their way to cater to the pastry stout trend. I'm not trying to defend Goose to the death but I really don't see how this year's lineup objectively is that different that past years on the aggregate.

I had my first bottle of Midnight Orange last night. No real difference from the tap versions I have had. They really nail the chocolate and orange combo - just not sure if it's something I prefer to have a whole pour/bottle of. Every time I have had it, there is a burn that is left from the aftertaste. I'm not sure if that is from alcohol, or something to do with the orange flavoring.

Agreed. If anything, prop 14 was the peak "pastryboi" BCBS...

2014 variant - Made in Rye barrels with Cassia Bark, Cocoa Nibs, Panela and Coconut Water

And it's an all timer variant for me.

Really, they did Prop 18 before?

He linked to Big John. So I guess he meant non-BA.

Yeah, more or less what I meant and just showing that they've done a big chocolate stout before. Granted it isn't barrel aged. Just trying to demonstrate that they've done similar stuff before.

Were those as overpowering? All the variants this year smack you in the face as if we wouldn't taste what GI was going for otherwise. I dunno

IMO Big John is no better a comparison to this year's Prop than Prop 16, 14, or any other beer with cacao nibs. The presence of processed chocolate is a radically different...PROPosition?...than any standard nibbed stout.

(Totally dipping back in to a conversation that advanced 20 pages since I last read it, expecting to be either flamed or ignored, nbd)

I work in NW IN and would love to get a bottle of Prop. Any idea where I can pick up one in South east IL near the Indiana border?

Any variant sightings near Bloomingdale? I imagine it's all gone by now.

Check Kuhn Food & Liquor in Carol Stream, small place that might still have something. Their beer menus listings showed they had it as of 11/23, short trip for you to quickly check it out.

If they have anything message me, I'll probably swing by their later after work to grab something.

That said, anyone know of a place around BG/Vernon Hills that has anything?

Capone’s on Monday December 3rd at 6pm may be the best option for those who were out of town this past weekend.

Their release has never lined up schedule wise for me, so apologies if this an ignorant question: is this FCFS and there will be a lineup hours before or is it more of a raffle type situation? After freezing outside of jewel for a good 3 and a half hours on friday, raffle scenarios/other means of distribution are far more attractive...
