For me, this thread is one of those beautiful moments that puts everything in perspective. Growing up in SoCal, I have had easy access to Coffee Speedway, V@S, Stone Espresso IRS, Espresso Yeti, as well as many other sought after BA stouts, both Coffee and non-coffee alike. However, I have grown up reading about KBS, BCBCS, Peruvian Morning, Peche Mortel, and all the other midwest/east coast hype-monsters, and If I were to drink the forum kool-aid, I would be led to believe that the moment I decided to imbibe in BCBCS or KBS, my brain would melt and I would instantly explode.

I finally got the chance to try BCBCS in new york, and I must say, while it was hands down a world class beer, it wasn't leagues better than many of the coffee stouts I have grown up drinking. I would probably prefer it over mikkeller BGB and Espresso Oak aged Yeti, but I would be hard pressed to chose it over stone espresso IRS (though I probably would after much debate.....) and might even chose Coffee Speedway over BCBCS.

Gotta love those moments reaffirming that above all else, great beer is great beer regardless of hype. Part of the fun of being a BA is the hunt to try these sought after beers, and I hope to never discount the enjoyment of pursuing these incredible beers, because this excitement is the spirit that keeps craft alive. However, it was nice to remember that good beer is just good beer - the beers that I grew up drinking don't pale in comparison to certain w@l3z, just because they dont have a whirlwind of hype and are relatively easy to get. There isn't close to the amount of insanity revolving around the release of stone espresso IRS, or even Espresso Yeti (which just chills on the shelves at the Laguna Hills Whole Foods all season), and thus when I tried BCBCS, I was genuinely surprised at how comparable it was to these beers. And if the KBS/BCBCS debate exists, well then I am just happy to know that the beers that people commit murder over are in the same league as a beer like Espresso Yeti, which I have been happily enjoying for a long time.

tl;dr: Good beer is good beer, regardless of availability. For some reason this thread made me happy to know that while I may not get a chance to try KBS for a while, I have been drinking good beer all along, regardless of what BA seems to be trending. Step back and enjoy the fun of the chase, but dont let it cloud your judgement.

My only "complaint" with Bourbon County Coffee is that it didn't taste all that different from regular Bourbon County. That being said its still delicious but I'd go with a 4 pack of Bourbon County for a few bucks more than a bomber of the Coffee version.

Mostly agree in that the coffee wasn't all that obvious, but still I thought it was the best version I had last year (regular, cherry rye, and coffee)- kind of like a more perfect version of the regular stuff. Is it really worth 2X as much? Once in a while, I suppose, though I would also gravitate to the straight version. If you haven't had a taste of it yet? Definitely pay the premium the first time.

I already hooked up a Wisconsin bro which will hopefully soften the FIB status given to us by those who live in the land of cheese and bearded women. (FIB = effing Illinois bastard)

They had one bottle of Coffee and a 4 pack of BCS.

I absolutely love Bourbon County Coffee, probably my favorite coffee imperial stout to date. I prefer it with 6 months to a year on it though so that the coffee doesn't overpower the delicious base beer.

Pretty sure it wasn't infected. I honestly wasn't that big of a fan of either Peruvian Morning or the regular BB Stout, though they tasted young, like a few months in the bottle will do them a lot of good. I also didn't get much coffee from the PM, but we'll see how it matures. Their BB Barleywine is so freaking good that I know they know what they're doing, so I'll just have to wait on these.

I have a bomber of BCBCS in my fridge right now. Haven't had the pleasure of tasting one yet. I was thinking of trying it over memorial day weekend, but after reading this thread I think I may want to wait until I can taste it side by side with KBS and see which I like better.

Honestly I just like that you're comparing KBS to BCBCS. IMO far too many people make the comparison to regular BCBS and it just doesn't make as much sense to me. Two completely different beers. One is coffee dominant (KBS) and one is barrel dominant (BCBS).

But I'm neutral on this one cause I love them both. I think KBS with a year on it just might beat out BCBCS by a small margin.

I had a bottle in November and another the first week of April and the coffee is not as pronounced. One of the best bottles of beer i have had in quite some time.

Yea their BBBW and BBS are amazing and age so well. Fingers crossed the PM isn't, turns out it's not as bad this year as last, last year almost the entire batch was infected. There isn't really much coffee in it the bourbon is quite there and I think that's what I love about it, if you get it fresh like within the first few weeks to a month of bottling there is coffee there, just too bad after 2 months mine started turning alkaliney, I hear it ages well but I have yet to buy any that don't go bad so I'm just avoiding it from now on.
