I've recently discovered I greatly enjoy beer. I want to start branching out and trying new things but after doing some research it seems there aren't a great number of brews to try around my hometown aside from the Busch/Miller type stuff. Any advice?

Where is your hometown? Use beerfly to search for places close to you.

If you're REALLY out in the boonies away from distribution you have two options: either huff it to a bigger/nearby city where they'll have a better selection or since you're in Georgia, you should be able to order online.

Craft beer has become so popular that almost all grocery stores devote some shelf space to it. If you can tell us where you live and what beers you've enjoyed recently, I'm sure we can help you out.

Did anyone else open this thread thinking they were going to read about some horrible tragedy?

How would I go about ordering online. I'm in Albany. I just discovered that we not only have terrapin here but founders, stone, and victory brews. I would certainly like to try some 3 floyds or something different though.

All of those are great breweries (Founders, Victory, Stone, and Terrapin). I have not had Founders since they are not available in Florida, but I can recommend from the other three for a mix a 6.

    Victory Hop Wallop (double IPA)
    Victory Hop Devil (double IPA)
    Stone IPA
    Stone Arrogant Bastard (Strong Ale)
    Stone Smoked Porter
    Stone Pale Ale
    Terrapin Wake-N-Bake (Coffee Oatmeal Stout)
    Terrapin Hopsecutioner (IPA)
    Terrapin Hop Karma (Brown Ale)
    Terrapin Rye Pale Ale

Also check out Sweetwater Brewing out of Atlanta

Another thing to remember is to make sure your the beer you're getting (especially IPA) is fresh. Most breweries use a best by date or bottled on date. Keep that in mind when picking out beers for you mix a 6.

When I go tonight I will be making a thread for all the SW Ga folks on the selection at this store. Apparently the one I heard about is a gold mine of craft beers and I won't have trouble finding some cool brews. Really excited.

Very good advice. I made that mistake a couple of times while at a grocery store where they did mix-a-six. I ended up with a few bottles that were way past their best by date. I think some grocery stores use these mix-a-six to get rid of old bottles. Now when I do buy a mix-a-six, I look for seasonals that I want to try before buying an entire six pack and I check the bottle dates. This might be a good opportunity to see which summer beers you like, and again in the Fall when those seasonals come out late summer.

That is a great idea! I like summer beer :grinning: I know that it isn't really "fancy" or "crafty" and it might not be something most geek out over since it is from coors, but Blue Moon features a a brew called short straw in their summer sampler pack. It is a mix between a farm house ale and a flanders red and I actually enjoyed the flavor quite a bit.

If you google Fresh Beer Only, there is a really helpful site that tells you how each brewery's bottle dating works.
