I was just wondering what some of you think of this brewery? I've been enjoying a number of their offerings lately, particularly their Nectareus and Big Ben Porter; I also have their Saison Imperiale stashed away, but I haven't had a good occasion to crack that open quite yet. Any comments? Favorites? I just personally think they're coming along nicely and are a brewery to watch.

I tried L'Assoiffé 10 Triple yesterday and it's pretty good. Reminded me of the Terre Ferme from A L'Abris de la Tempête. Haven't tried the Obscur Désir yet but is supposed to be good stout.

I've had their initial line-up (Rousse, Blanche, Blonde) and wasn't entirely satisfied but i've heard some good things about their "connoisseur" line.

Obscur Desir is from Brasseurs du Temps. Too many brasseurs

I've spoken with one of their marketing reps and he informed me that their initial line-up is more for the casual drinker, i.e. the people who would just as soon buy a case of Coors or something along those lines. Their other brews are for the craft beer enthusiast; this was a conscious choice on their part in order to play both sides of the market, which makes sense when you taste the beer (I had the red: not a big fan at all).

Hey there, when I initially started seeing them pop up, I was a bit taken back with their prices. That bottle of Saison was 12$ and their 6 packs are upwards of 16$ plus tax and bottle deposit. That being said, I've yet to be disappointed with anything I've tried from them. I've had their Dubel and Tripel, which were nice, the IPA and Moka stout were not bad either. The two they just released - the honey brown and porter - I have yet to try, but got them sitting on my shelf.

I guess for me, so far they have yet to blow me away. I like that they make a descent IPA, as this seems to be something lacking in Quebec brews. But Dieu du ciel makes a better chocolate stout (I know they are different, but still pretty similar), and Microbrasserie Charlevoix blows their Belgium stuff out of the water. But I am biased as I think charlevoix is the best brewery in Quebec by a landslide.

Maybe i'll spend the 12$ and get that Saison, I've been eying it for months, and no one is buying it at the IGA next to my place

I've had everything they made so far and I have nothing to complain about aside from the price. The (rousse, blanche and blonde) are very ordinary and will not buy for me. It's something I buy for guests that come over and don't usually like craft beer.

Apparently the Saison is really good, but can't vouch for it yet. The Nectareus and Big Ben, however, are quite good and I will vouch for them :stuck_out_tongue: Nectareus is a good honey brown and the Big Ben is a surprisingly sessionable porter. They also released an Ice Porter (only one in the world apparently, can get it only from Le Picoleur) which I've yet to try, but my buddy scored me a couple of bottles so I will let you all know how it is. And as for Charlevoix, well, I am somewhat inclined to agree with you; Trou Du Diable does put up some stiff competition with a few of their brews though.

I did tried that Saison a couple of weeks ago... and I really liked it. To be blown away by a beer (i.e., to me it means perfect score! ) it takes a lot for me... I would say Obscur Désir by Brasseurs du Temps did blow me away 'tho. It ain't cheap too.

Nevertheless, the 12$ for that big bottle of Saison is worth it. I would get that over a 12$ bottle of wine any day!

Regarding TDD, their stuff is quite expansive too. That Dulcis bottle cost me around 19$... better be good

    Cheers all,
    Eric

Excellent, great to hear! I'll be busting my Saison out soonish as the weather is starting to heat up and I've been holding onto it for a bit.

Yeah, TDD is, unfortunately, pricey; however, I've yet to have a bad offering from them. The Buteuse Brassin Speciale is unreal, though the last bottle I had was overly sour due to excess wild yeast. Oh well! Dulcis, I hear, is excellent.

I've never tried Obscur Desir, but I do love my Impy Stouts so I will give it a chance on your rec. I got burned by BDT once a while ago when I bought a DumDuminator... horrible beer imo, and expensive. Never again!

Ice Porter, well that sounds interesting. I'm relatively new to the beer world, but the only other beer that I've read about involving ice, was Aventinus by Schneider Weiss. I forgot about the Black IPA BDM put out, was not fantastic, but ok I guess. Dunham makes a fine Black IPA though. Sadly I haven't actually had anything from Trou Du Diable, I live in the South West and can't seem to find it at the spots I frequent. I've been reading great reviews though, can't wait to try their Tripel.

I have a bottle of BDT on my shelf, their Imperial IPA. I've read it's good, but a bit too sweet. Guess i'll see once I try it. I saw the amazing reviews on their Imperial Stout, was hoping to find it, but never did.

I found Houblon Noire to be pretty un-good. Exploite and Interdite were alright and the Imperial Saison was just short of pretty good.

from what Ive tried Blanche, Blond, and Rousse were pretty lousy, L'interdite, L'Assoiffe and L'Exploite were pretty good, the difference between the two groups was quite noticeable.

I find there are bit hit (Exploite, IPA) and miss (rousse, blonde) with some pretty expensive offerings. I also don’t get the constant change in labels and bottle sizes which unfortunately remind me of AMB.

I would be very curious to try that iced porter:wink:

The ice porter is great, I was sent a bottle and hear it is pretty expensive and only available at the brewery.

Yup, 10 bucks a bottle. It certainly isn't cheap! Glad to hear it's good though, am anxious to try it when I receive it...
