My girlfriend and I were talking about this recently. Mimosas are a regular thing, bloody marys as well. But I don't hear about beer at breakfast being as common. I know about FBS, and wish it would come to CA, but are there any others that would be good at breakfast? What food would be a good pairing with it?

Some chilaquiles washed down with some Xocoveza. MMMMMmMmMm

When I get up early for European soccer. There is nothing better than an English fry-up with a Irish dry stout. Except when I am really lazy or still hung over then it is just beans and toast with an Alesmith Nut Brown ale.

I think any porter or stout is breakfast worthy. Especially if on the sweeter side - like a milk stout or a stout heavy on the coffee and/or chocolate flavors.

On a cold chilly winter morning I could see a heavy strong boozy stout w/ biscuits, preserves and blue cheese. But typically for breakfast/brunch foods I'd prefer something bright acidic fruity and lighter like a wit, hefeweizen, lighter saison, or a fruit beer like Founders Cerise. The oils from things like hashbrowns, sausages, grits w/ butter, or eggs w/ lighter cheeses would be lifted by the effervescence of these style beers.

For some reason savor breakfast food is the only food other than sweets/dessert that I enjoy porter or stout with, guess its the coffee and roast qualities. Otherwise I've done well with pales, browns, wits, and many others

Am I the only one that doesn't enjoy beer with breakfast?

Don't judge our collective drinking problems!

To the OP, wheat beers work nicely. I even enjoy a nice beer-mosa when a substandard wheat beer is on hand. But it kind of depends what breakfast is. With pancakes or waffles, beer doesn't go very well. You could probably get away with an English mild or brown if you've got decent maple syrup. Eggs, however, greatly benefit from being paired with either a non-aggressive hoppy pale or IPA, or a pale Belgian - singel if you're watching yourself, tripel if you're planning an all-day buzz.

I have said this on multiple occasions,

"I would be happy to have 8 oz. of New Glarus's Belgian Red every morning with breakfast for the rest of my life."

Really, it's just adult fruit juice. Probably good for you too.

Lived on New Glarus Raspberry Tart and Red when I lived in Appleton. Wonderful beers and great for breakfast.

Hefe is pretty inseparable from Sunday brunch in much of Germany. I won't argue with that.

Belgian Witbier with cheesy eggs, preferably something assertive in cheese like Asiago, or funky like Gorgonzola. Witbier with cheesy eggs are awesome.

    Also with sourdough toast.

So, just go do it. Cheesy eggs, sourdough toast, witbier.
It's low abv too, so ideal for breakfast.

Two beers I think are good breakfast beers are Southern tier chokalt and Maine King Titus. With pancakes/waffles bacon, sausage, hash browns, eggs sunny side and biscuits.

The only beer I've had with breakfast was, yes, FBS, paired with eggs and toast. 8/10, would do again.

Surly's Coffee Bender, Modern Times' Blackhouse Stout and Ballast Point's Victory at Sea have been my favorites for beer w/breakfast. Surprisingly, Coffee Bender paired rather well with steel cut oatmeal (w/maple syrup.) A nice, sip-worthy RIS is also high on the list (Port Brewing's Santa's Little Helper goes great with a more savory meal as well... biscuits and gravy!)

There are a few restaurants that serve beer and/or beer cocktails at brunch popping up. They tend to skew hipster—even for brunch—but I think it's spreading. The one I remember best is Nightwood in Chicago: Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald, espresso and irish whisky. They've been doing it for a while. There are a few others in Chicago that have good breakfast beer options.

At home, it's another story. Beyond the obvious coffee stout with whatever—always a good choice—Double DBA with some steak & eggs? Did you hear me hesitate? Even a simple bowl of granola with yoghurt accompanied by RIS (or 'AIS'...) is a great start to my day.

Hoppy bloody mary's are awesome. Torpedo and spicy bloody Mary mix goes great with any egg dish.

I like to tell myself that one of these days I'm going to try it, but the truth is, every time I even think about it after waking up, my stomach puts the kabosh on that instantly. I also could never pull it off on a work day, and if I woke up on Sunday morning and cracked a beer at 8am, I think my girl would make me an appointment at the local mental health facility. :grimacing:

I do get a kick out of the "What Beer are You Drinking Now" thread posts at six or seven in the morning, tho. You guys are metal. :grinning:

And the Founders Breakfast Stout would have to be my choice, it's just to perfect to consider anything else in my opinion. It might also be the only way my girl would accept it...."But look, hun, it says 'Breakfast' right on the bottle!!!"

when i was younger, i used to think popping a beer before noon meant those people were alcoholics. i remember the first time i got hammered before noon (at a florida/south carolina football game back in 2005)...now, sometimes, my favorite time of day is to wake up, go the fridge and grab a nice beer to enjoy while the sun is shining through my windows. to me, any beer is good for breakfast, but i prefer a nice coffee stout
