I used to think Teku glasses were the dumbest looking glasses I'd ever seen. Then, I drank out of one.

Yes. When I am served, proper glassware is expected. No. When I am serving, the guest has a say.

Look, a glass itself may only make a small difference in taste if any, but it does make the experience different and can totally affect ones behavior. I tend to chug from a mug and sip from a snifter-different behavior, different experience, may impact how at least I perceive the taste to be. The glass can help to set the tone of the experience

I just can't see drinking beer out of a glass with a proper stem - too "stuffed-shirt" for me.

Really, I think any glass will do. But do pour your beers, it opens up the flavours.

    Srsly.

it doesn't really matter to me as long as I don't swallow the quarter at the bottom of the glass!!:slight_frown:

I have maybe around thirty different glasses and I rotate through them trying every style in different, often 'wrong' glasses. How would one know if he doesn't experiment? The main difference between different glass shapes comes down to this: the more narrow the glass, the more head retention, so whatever beers have a prized head (wheats in particular) need a narrow glass. The wider the bowl, conversely, offers less head retention, but provides a better 'nose', so stronger, more aromatic beers benefit from snifters and tulips. The tasting differences between various glasses, I've done side by sides, I swear is there, however slight. To me it's all about the glass that I just like looking at and holding.

If I have the proper branded glassware, I use it. Otherwise I prefer an imperial pint because I can get almost all 12 ozers in and still have (Max) head room. When traveling I carry an unbranded standard pint glass for hotel beers.

What kind of glass is that?
Don't know that I've seen anything like that before.

Personally, I have several types that I rotate in and out. I have several tulips and snifters, a set of nonic pints, a Maine Beer co curved pint, and I recently grabbed a couple of the Dogfish / SN IPA glass. I do like that one a lot, it does seem to do something to the beer.
I have a big collection of other glasses, including tons of shaker pints. At this point, most of the shakers are relegated to non alcoholic drinks and for when we have guests over.
Most of those are boxed up in the basement, but we're moving next month, so I hope to be able to display them somewhere. Not looking forward to moving them or my beer collection. (or my guitar collection for that matter)

It's actually (and I am mostly guessing here) a parfait glass, probably circa 1970s from the chunky geometric feel of the thing. It, like all of my glassware, came from a thrift store and was not part of a set. Which means actually that it is made for putting desserts in. This is acceptable as beer = dessert frequently in my case. The bad part of using this glass is that you won't get much head on anything due to the width and shallowness. However it is great for getting your face all up in the beer to smell it. I use it in the same way you would for a snifter type glass. Also it weighs quite a bit (for a glass) so it could probably be used as a deadly weapon in a pinch. I chose it because it was heavy, unique, and sturdy (again for a glass).

It technically would be considered to have a stem without making me feel like some sort of goober who should be wearing a velvet smoking jacket while drinking beer at home by myself.

Good luck on the move and have yourself a nice beer.

Yeah, but aren't the plastic plants a choking hazard?

I bought a Sam Adams Utopia this year and the glass they give you (by mail) looks just like a style of wine glass I saw at the Richard Childress Winery this weekend. Hmmm....

When all is said and done, if I don't have the right glass, I will still enjoy the beer.

I have never tried eating them.
Oh! For the fish? You will be relieved to know that I have since upgraded the platy tank to live plants.

As to glassware (and I refuse to call it "breweriana", since this sounds like a digestive disorder) my M.O. is to go to the thrift stores, swap meets, flea markets, and yard sales. You'd be amazed at what you might find and for cheap too. I hold the glasses in my hand till I find one that feels right. Then I hold it up to the light to check for cracks or chips. Finally I check for hard water stains; this isn't a deal breaker but it means I will have to do some work to get it prepped for use. I'm not too fussed about doing things the "right way". Seriously considering breaking out the jelly jar glasses for tasting purposes; the ones with the ducks in straw hats. The size would be about right for that yeah?

I tend to eschew stuff with logos on it in a general way, and if I've seen one Bud or Sam Adams glass I've seen a plethora.
Still a major step up from the ubiquitous red plastic Solo cups of most peoples' first beer experiences.

One last thought: I tend to go for unique but not fussy. If that fails either standard US pint, nonic pint, or a mason jar in a pinch. These are versatile and work well for most styles.

I do agree with you, but the aromatics of HD'nR- even though great out of the can- are amazing as it evolves in a glass.

For IPA's I use a DFH Spiegelau IPA glass and for stouts I have a Rogue Stout glass (Spiegelau). I also have a Tulip I use on occasion but it's too small at 12 oz exactly. No breathing room.
For anything else, I have a Sierra Nevada Hot Tulip Imperial Pint Glass.

I like the way the etching on the SN, DFH and Rogue glasses keep a head on the beer. I think the Spiegelau are great.
