Evening All, I've been interested in this beer since first hearing about it, but know little about it...cost, bottle count, availability, etc. If anyone has any info to share, including if you traded for it or would be interested in trading a bottle, I'd appreciate it. Thanks! B
They do not; Breakside is not bottling yet (they bought a new facility and they will eventually have bottling, but definitely not this year). So I'm not sure where/what you heard about it, but right now you are out of luck. They were serving it at the pub on tap for a limited time and now there is no way to get it (unless they brew it again).
They actually did release some 750ml for a while in 2011 and early 2012... But none into distribution beyond the NE Dekum brewery. I took the photo of the Bourbon Barrel Aztec here on BA listing last winter; as I recall I sent it as an extra in a trade I did months ago. As I recall, bottles were either $12 or $15. Regarding bottling/canning at Breakside's expanded facility in SE Portland (set to be brewing in the next few weeks), I'd expect more barrel-aged beers - and a return of barreled Aztec wouldn't surprise me... By the way, they did release very limited amounts of 12 oz bottles at their 2nd Anniversary event back in May... Some interesting one-offs in a mixed six-pack, including a nice berlinerweiss, versions of their 1st and 2nd anniversary beers (a wheat wine and... I forget...) ...and they had a Cherry version of Barreled Aztec. Good stuff!
Thanks! Considering there's a review on this site referring to a bottle he'd received, I figured at least some made it into circulation. Appreciate the feedback.
A little more clarification on other Breakside bottlings: besides the Bourbon Barrel Aztec (which I think they did twice), they released a few other 750s over the course of 2011 and early 2012. For most it was just a few cases, less than 100 bottles. Among those I recall: Gin Barrel Double Wit, Soursop Wheat and Grisette (which I just opened an unintentionally aged bottle of a last month - very good!). Also (since I was going from memory last night when I posted) the six different bottles released in May were: Bourbon Barrel 1st Anniversary Wheatwine 2nd Anniversary Ale (sour golden aged in Old Tom gin barrels with kaffir lime leaf) Bourbon Barrel-Aged Tripel (aged in Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel) Gin Barrel IPA (Old Tom gin barrel) Passionfruit Berlinerweisse Bourbon Barrel Sour Cherry Aztec
Don't forget the Simcoe dry hopped gin-aged IPA in 750ml bottles. Tasty. I remember the first BA Aztec release numbers being in the mid-40's. I think the second batch may have been a little more. I have one left that I'm saving for a tasting around Christmas, so I definitely know they exist in bottles.
I must attend this tasting you speak of... Really though, that bottle of it you gave me was an eye opener. Low expectations completely blown out of the water.
