Is anyone else here particularly fond of this style? I feel like they don't get enough love where I'm from but when done right can be some of my favorite beers. I work at a craft beer bar and whenever we have something like this on tap people seem to want it to be either a full on sour or ipa but don't appreciate the funky/hoppy combo. I've really enjoyed the Evil Twin Femme Fatale series as well as the Hop Savant beers from Crooked Stave and recently tried American Funk from Captain Lawrence to name a few. What are some of your favorite beers that would fall into this category?

Need to drink them fresh for the hops

Need to age them to allow the brett to do their thing.

Seriously though...done right they are great and taste great both fresh and aged.

    My favorite is probably Marble's.

The hop savant stuff from crooked stave is awesome. I'd love to see more done right.
    Enjoy after was garbage imo...

Agreed, I definitely fell prey to Stone's marketing and got excited by waiting until the Enjoy After date but ended up being pretty disappointed with that one

I'm a fan, especially on tap. My favorites are by Kent Falls here in CT.

Duvel, Orval, De Ranke XX Bitter and Prairie Hop ... and super fresh Tripel Karmeliet

Those rank relatively high on the funky/hoppy meter for me. Duvel's probably my favorite.

I can't say I'm a fan of any variant of the IPA, be it Brett IPA, black IPA, and barrel aged IPA. I've tried all three and struck out most of the time.

Surly's Unbridled is the bee's knees when it comes to Brett IPAs.

    Counterpoint(s):
    • Surly Unbridled
    • Brew Kettle Black Rajah
    • Dogfish Head Button Baton
All stellar beers. Different strokes, though.

Considering that some researchers believe that the English IPAs of yesteryear had Brett, this isn't such a bad thing. I'm not saying that American brewers making modern Brett IPAs are making beers that resemble those original IPAs... but it's not on the same wavelength as coffee IPAs or whatever.

Had one, might have been Crooked Stave or Allagash. An abomination, completely offended all of my sensibilities

Nope, don't care for these at all. Tried a few, just weird mashes of failures.

I've definitely started to see more and more sour IPAs. If you ever get the chance, try most any sour from Hermit Thrush in VT. Their Green Street Sour IPA is a favorite of mine.

Also, I have a bottle of Enjoy After 4/20/17 from Stone.. has anyone cracked into that yet?

WildDevil aged 9-24 months is amazing. I like it even more than Orval regardless of age.

I hear Green Flash retired Rayon Vert. That's too bad.

That beer nailed it. Not particularly thinking how to do IPA plus Brett right; more like simply an awesome beer that when I could get ahold of it, I knew I'd love it.

Once had a very disruptive marital dispute because my spouse casually drank my last Rayon Vert, not knowing how special they were...

Oddly the only two I'd be excited to see frequently were both Mikkeller collabs from 2014. Invasion w/ Anchorage and American Style w/ Prairie. Might help that these tend to be several months in the bottle before they see shelves. But drinking them soon after that seems to be the way to go (check the disparity in reviews of those from 2014 vs the BAs that stashed them for 2+ years).

Crooked Stave does wonders as well with Brett and hops.
