I will be flying into San Diego next month for two days and would like to know if there are any good Brew Pubs down town?

To the OP. The sarcasm is way too thick here. Try this. http://beermapping.com/a/333

Monkey Paw. Or if you can venture a bit further from downtown, I’d also recommend Tiger Tiger.

There's nothing to apologize about. You asked a beer question in the correct forum. It actually takes less effort and keystrokes to just say, "Pizza Port, Alpine, Monkey Paw and Tiger! Tiger!" than it does to start complaining about why the original poster isn't using the search function.

I recommend Pizza Port, Alpine, Monkey Paw and Tiger! Tiger!. There's also plenty of nice non brewpub beer bars in town as well and many breweries have gourmet food trucks on site as well if you go on Thursday through Sunday.

Only Monkey paw is downtown. geeze you don't even answer his questions correctly . As for brewpubs downtown there is also The Beer Company, Karl Strauss and a Rock Bottom (don't recommend), and as mentioned Monkey Paw (furthest from downtown, but best of the lot)

Plus, telling him to search helps him a) possibly find out about other things or answers not brought up in this thread. Such as there are not too many brewpubs downtown but there are some good beer bars he should look into. b) it teaches him next time he is traveling somewhere to do a search. I am sure (or hope) he has now done a search and has probably found a wealth of knowledge.

I saw the downtown part, but I didn't really think it made a ton of sense to limit it to downtown because there basically isn't anything of note in downtown. There are a few places (as you mentioned; Karl Strauss, Rock Bottom and the Beer Company), but I wouldn't recommend any of them at all, much less over getting a cab and going to Pizza Port or heading to North Park. Monkey Paw is "downtown," but its a little out of the way still and is also basically in an area that I would describe, for lack of a better word, as ghetto.

Telling new posters to just go search instead of bothering everyone just makes communities insular because its impersonal and suggests posters are doing something wrong when they ask. It doesn't seem like a bothersome question anyways.

I think it would be useful to ask the OP where he is staying, and whether or not he has a car. Also, the strict definition of brewpub may be due to what he is used to. We have many beer bars with incredible tap lists and decent food, and I think the distinction of them brewing (some of) their own beers may be limiting.

True, but we have excellent advice being given time and again that essentially goes ignored, and I think that is the source of the sarcasm - not the "leave us alone" aspect of it. The proper way to deal with this, I suspect, is for somebody to simply respond with links to a number of the recent threads with pertinent info.

It would be nice if the city guides here allowed for FAQs, map links, and such, but that probably is a topic for another forum.

Rather than re-type my reasoning, here is a ~6 month old comment on why these threads are annoying. If people put some basic effort in before asking, there are a lot of people here who are willing to provide advice and confirm choices or guide people to better options. However, if you just show up and ask something that has been asked repeatedly in the past - and would also be covered by BA's Places feature - you're liable to get a response telling you to use the search feature.

I disagree, exactly for the reasons you posted in the first paragraph. For one, not only is he asking a question that can be EASILY answered by search, he also gives no details (where exactly is he staying, is here for quick packed business trip, or vacation with lots of down time, walking/cab/rental car distance from downtown, spot for a quick meal, or hanging out for a while). As you said there are not many brewpubs downtown. Is the OP fixed on going to a brewpub, or just a place with beer and food? That would open the doors to a lot of other options. Is Alpine a great suggestion or a shitty one? What about Stone Liberty Station? Maybe Karl Strauss is perfect, decent beer, quick meal, nice location. Or maybe he does want the finest IPAs in the country and some good BBQ, so go to Alpine. Maybe he has a good amount of free time and wants to experience the scene of Stone Liberty Station, or hang out at the beach after going to PPOB.

Specific questions don't get ripped on (as much?) as they indicate they have put thought into it and are looking for a direct response. Vague and broad questions are not good. It is the same as in college. Don't ask a question if you have not been coming to class or keeping up on the reading material. Ask well informed questions to a get a well informed answer.

OP, I am not trying to be mean to you. I want you to have a kickass time in SD. I want to help you, but as Jerry says, "help me, help you".

Telling users to do searches first accomplishes a few things. They are:
    • empowers the user to help his or herself (the tech is there, why not use it?)
    • locate thorough and informative posts from prior discussions on the same topic (which are countless)
    • helps filter out needless posts duplicate posts (many posters don't even bother checking the front page to see if their question has been asked recently as they usually think their situations are unique)
    • prevents user from being clowned by those of us who don't feel like answering the same questions all the time
    • doesn't waste anyone's time (really useful posts take time to write and are ultimately pointless since the questions have been discussed ad nauseam)
I'll give you an example. There's a very informative post about Portland destinations that can be accessed with a simple search (i think it comes up on first page of hits). It's pretty much the equivalent of a wiki or sticky. Pretty much everything you need to know about a trip to Portland is in that post. The potential visitor, by locating this post, has just saved everyone time and effort. Everyone wins. If by chance a search doesn't answer every single question, then more specific questions can be asked.

I am not exactly sure what constitutes downtown SD, but you would be silly to not hit up one of the Pizza Port locations down there.

You're from Michigan...look up the Yard House too downtown. Lots of local stuff there too.
