I want to pull the trigger on this so bad, but I have a lot of wedding brewing to do before I can dedicate a set of equipment to the bugs.

That was something I was wondering about.....Does this kit have a shelf life?

If I got into home brewing at some point I would love to try this kit, but that would be something I would start in the winter.

IT seems like you have to buy all the yeasts needed so no worries there. Only thing would be the currants as far as shelf life I think. I bought the kit, should be able to brew it soon, but my sour vessels need to be emptied first. Once I receive it I can post more about what comes, etc.

Did you order the all grain or extract? I was about to order all grain, but they are sold out. I'm curious about the grainbill.

All kits are sold out....that was quick. I imagine there wasn't too many to begin with

Probably quite a long shelf life on the zante currants as they are basically just raisins.

I would be interested in seeing the recipe. I might just buy the ingredients myself if the kit is sold out (but the barrel chunks sound like a neat addition).

So I just put in an order for this kit - guess they have more in stock
I'm slightly nervous about it - what should I know ahead of time?
I am planning on the mash, boil and primary as normal, then racking to a carboy - gonna have to get one of those - using the regular equipment I have. After that, once the bugs are pitched, I'll get new or use my current tubing and such for the bugged, and get a new set to use.
Should I make a starter for the bug mix? The description online said to pitch Brett at the time of racking to secondary, then the lacto and pedio later. This is a all in one blend, how would that work, or just the oak chunks in at the time of racking?
Has anyone picked this up and brewed it yet? How's things coming along?

Hah. I was just looking at this kit about 10 minutes ago and wondering if anyone here had brewed it.

This kit seems very expensive since it doesn't include the minimum of three yeasts you need to buy.

It came to 62 with the abbey and bug blend yeasts. It is a bit high for an all grain kit, but it does have the currents included, plus chunks from Consecration barrels. Not to mention a presumably substantial grain bill. I'll pick up the bottling yeast when it gets close to that time.

    Pricey? yes.

Enough extract to hit 1.090ish, plus oak, currants and hops? that's a lot of stuff to justify the cost.

So has no one picked this up and brewed it?
Guess I'll have to be the guinea pig.
How about the question in general? What do people do with sours that have that Bree/ped/lacto blend as far as when to pitch?

I brewed it up a month or so ago. Gotta add the lacto and pedio in two weeks. Think im gonna throw in the oak at that time as well. work in progress

i debated about buying it, but it really is a lot of money for not a lot of substance.
you can pick up most of that stuff on your own and it would cost a fraction of the price. the only unique thing is the wood they give.

A fraction? How much does DME cost in your neck of the woods? there has to be at least 12 lbs of DME in it, probably 3-4 oz of hops(Consecration clocks it at 30 IBUs) 2 lbs of currants and a few oz of limited supply oak. Just the DME is 33.75 at Morebeer. Yeah you can get it all minus the oak for probably under 45, but then you will not have that certain je ne sais quo.

(I do not work for, have never shopped at, and have no connection to MoreBeer. What I stated above only has to correlate to brewers who purchase in small quantities and brew extract. The price for the all-grain batch is ludicrous but the link was to the extract)

I asked about the barrel chunks...it's the whole barrel, which means you're getting the outside as well. Lord only knows what it's been exposed to or what it contains...dust, dirt, spilled wine/beer, fugus, bacteria, yeast etc...
