Every time I think I'm done for a while, someone has more ideas...

BrewCipher 3.4 spreadsheet is now up for download.

    New in Version 3.4:
    - Added Water Tab feeds to Recipe Tab and the BrewDay PrintMe Tab
    - Added Full Yeast Strain Names (in addition to Numbers)*
    - Added User Storable Water Profile Input**
    - Added a field for specific Recipe Name (separate from Style selection)

*thanks to FFreak for typing those in for an easy C&P
**due to the shenanigans required to make a multi-table lookup work in excel, this feature does not work correctly under Apache Open Office. With OE, you'll get one canned profile max.

    Feature Recap...
    - Predicts attenuation based not only on yeast strain, but also on mash conditions and grain bill composition
    - Understands that simple sugars are 100% fermentable, and that they are not subject to mash efficiency or yeast strain factors
    - Understands that some gravity contributors are not fermentable at all
    - Accounts explicitly for wort and water losses, and adjusts total water (and related calculations) accordingly
    - Uses a correct Tinseth formula with Avg Boil Gravity in the 'bigness' factor rather than the pre-boil OG (which is both popular and wrong)
    - Incorporates optional Modified Tinseth Formula…
    - Limits IBUs to 110 (solubility limit)
    - Splices new utilization curve to Tinseth utilization curve above 65 IBUs, to more closely agree with actual vs theoretical IBUs measured
    - Adds bitterness contributions for post boil hop additions, modeled and extrapolated from the work of Mark G. Malowicki
    - Hop Utilization Multiplier parameter to fine tune hop utilization to your system
    - Single infusion batches with single batch sparge, or mashout and lauter, or Brew-In-A-Bag
    - Wort Oxygenation Recommendations
    - Lagering Days Recommendations
    - Highlights any Gravities, ABVs, IBUs, and SRMs that are not within BJCP style guidlelines
    - Computes Diastatic Power for the Mash, and warns when grist's DP is marginal or poor
    - Scales Grain Bill to any desired Original Gravity
    - Calculates Mash pH and results of acid and Brewing Salt Additions, including Sparge Water acidification
    - Predicts Mash Efficiency based on known Efficiency and change in grain weight and/or sparge to no-sparge or vice versa
    - Automatically computes Yeast Starter Volumes, including stepped starters. Supports harvested yeast slurries.
    - Includes an optional, improved ABV calculation
    - Inputs for Post Boil/Post Fermentation gravity and volume data, to compute actual mash efficiency, attenuation, and ABV
    - Converts Refractometer readings Specific Gravity Values
    - Choice of U.S. standard measurements or Metric
    - Choice of Plato or SG gravity measurements

Any free way to use all of the buttons? I have the basic free version of excel, and stuff like the Scale! doesn't work. Also I get compatibility errors when I save. Its still useful, but not as useful as it should be.

What do you mean by 'free basic version' of excel? What is the actual version called?

It should work in excel, as long as macros are allowed.
The scale feature also works in Apache Open Office (which is free), as long as you download the .xlsm version of BrewCipher, and set Apache Open Office up to allow macros.

I suspect you're getting compatibility warnings, not errors. If so, ignore them...you're not losing any functionality, unless there's something odd about your excel version.

Thanks for this, I used brewcipher the other day for the first time doing an IPA. Is there any way that you or we can add more hops to the program? There was quite a few that were not there. Thanks!

There's a HOPLOOKUP Tab where you can add any hops you want. Or message me with hops you'd like to see in a future version.

Ahh never noticed the hop look up. I'll add Amarillo on my end, but would definitely like to see it incorporated on another update. Thanks for allowing feedback!

Not at my home computer right now but its the kind of microsoft office that comes preloaded on pc's. I think its the 'trial' version or something.
Can I allow macros on the free version of Microsoft excel somehow?

And yeah, they are compatibility warnings not errors and I already ignore them, just thought I should mention it incase it was important.

Oh, also, is there any way to update saved recipes to the new brewcipher? Like, I have some saved but I used 3.2 or something when I saved them, is there a way to update those to the new version?

There's really no easy way. That's one of the tradeoffs with spreadsheets.

As far as I know, excel trial versions are not functionally limited in any way, but they do expire after the trial period. There should be a message bar at the top of your sheet with a button you can click on to enable macros. The exact words on the bar vary by version.

When I first read this, I thought you were looking for a "More Hops" button. Like, just hit the button and blammo! More hops go in to your recipe. That would be cool.

Once again @VikeMan thanks for your hard work! Can't wait to play around with this once I get back to NJ!

If your excel is a trial version that doesn't work anymore, look for OpenOffice. Google it, download it, and it'll work just as fine for the spreadsheet.

So I checked. Mine is the Microsoft Excel Starter 2010. Macros are disabled to get you to buy the real thing. I'll check out OpenOffice.

Hmmm. Just so you know... Scale! is the only macro in the sheet. I probably wouldn't switch to it unless you really want the scaling feature. The sheet isn't nearly as pretty in OO as in excel. But some people are using it in OO.
