BrewCipher 4.0 spreadsheet, the New Styles edition, is now up for download.

    New in Version 4.0:
    - Support for BJCP 2015 Style Guidelines. (2008 styles are still there also, prefixed with "08-")
    - Hydrometer Temperature Correction Calculation

    Feature Recap...
    - Predicts attenuation based not only on yeast strain, but also on mash conditions and grain bill composition
    - Understands that simple sugars are 100% fermentable, and that they are not subject to mash efficiency or yeast strain factors
    - Understands that some gravity contributors are not fermentable at all
    - Accounts explicitly for wort and water losses, and adjusts total water (and related calculations) accordingly
    - Uses a correct Tinseth formula with Avg Boil Gravity in the 'bigness' factor rather than the pre-boil OG (which is both popular and wrong)
    - Incorporates optional Modified Tinseth and Rager Formulas…
    - Limits IBUs to 110 (solubility limit)
    - Splices new utilization curve to Tinseth and Rager utilization curve above 65 IBUs, to more closely agree with actual vs theoretical IBUs measured
    - Adds bitterness contributions for post boil hop additions
    - Hop Utilization Multiplier parameter to fine tune hop utilization to your system
    - First Wort Hopping
    - User adjustable Pellet/Leaf Hop Bonuses/Penalties
    - Single infusion batches with single batch sparge, or mashout and lauter, or Brew-In-A-Bag
    - Wort Oxygenation Recommendations
    - Lagering Days Recommendations
    - Highlights any Gravities, ABVs, IBUs, and SRMs that are not within BJCP style guidelines (2008 and 2015)
    - Computes Diastatic Power for the Mash, and warns when grist's DP is marginal or poor
    - Scales Grain Bill to any desired Original Gravity and Hop Bills to any desired IBUs, separately or together
    - Calculates Mash pH and results of acid and Brewing Salt Additions, including Sparge Water acidification
    - Built in Water Profile recommendations for each style
    - User Storable Water Profile Input (feature works in Excel, but not Apache Open Office)
    - Predicts Mash Efficiency based on known Efficiency and change in grain weight and/or sparge to no-sparge or vice versa
    - Automatically computes Yeast Starter Volumes, including stepped starters. Supports harvested yeast slurries.
    - Includes an optional, improved ABV calculation
    - Inputs for Post Boil/Post Fermentation gravity and volume data, to compute actual mash efficiency, attenuation, and ABV
    - Converts Refractometer readings to Specific Gravity Values
    - Choice of U.S. standard measurements or Metric
    - Choice of Plato or SG gravity measurements
    - Carbonation Calculations
    - Hydrometer Temperature Correction Calculations
    - More user selectable Brewhouse Parameters than you can shake a stick at (but the defaults will work pretty well for most people too)

BrewCipher runs in Excel, Apache Open Office, Google Sheets App, and the iOS Excel App. Download it from Google Drive or DropBox.

Disappointed you missed the sous vide calculation in this release

Minor Update, Version 4.1 is up.

    - Added a display in the Menu Tab's yeast starter section to automatically compute and show the number of packs/vials to use if not making a starter. (Previously, if not making a starter, user had to manually change the number of packs until "No Starter Needed" appeared.)
    - Added pre-boil OG display to the BrewDay Print Me tab
    - Added some yeast strains, including some dry yeasts

Just switched over to 4.1 and I am having a problem, it appears that a Y/N drop-down box has been overlaid over the Batch Size cell on the recipe page making me unable to change from 5.1 gallons. Thanks for your continued work on this as well.

Are you running in OpenOffice? If so, which file did you download? From the Readme.txt and user guide...
    --------------------------------------------------
If you will run BrewCipher under Apache Open Office, download the .xlsm version.

If you will run BrewCipher under Excel, download the .xls version, or the .xlsm version if your version of Excel supports .xlsm.
    ----------------------------

The following apply if running in Apache Open Office:
    - Download the .xlsm (not .xls) version of the BrewCipher workbook *initially*.
    - When saving your workbooks, "Save As" Excel97/2000/XP (one of the .xls formats in the list), since OpenOffice doesn't offer .xlsm as a save format. When you reopen *that* .xls file in OpenOffice, it should work fine.

Thanks, I actually use both and go back and forth depending on computer. I was in Open Office and I'm sure that was the issue.

Quick suggestion for next update: mash tun size and an over capacity function. My normal qt/# put me over today. My old spreadsheet I designed had this built in. Would be nice to have it here too.

I may be missing something, or just a super nube, but I am looking to brew a SMASH using Weyermann Plisner Malt. Is that listed on the BrewCipher Grains? Or is there an alternative, or does it even matter? Thanks for the help in advance.

"German Pils" or the 2 SRM option below it would be your best bets.

Mick, would there be any way to incorporate the water in LME in the calculations? My sister gave me a kit that had 6.6 lb of LME, and I ended up overshooting my volume on that batch. Not a huge concern for me since I rarely use LME, but it might be helpful for others.

How did you calculate your water? It's more a curiosity just to see what was your thought process was. What I've done is use the "pints a pound the world around" saying to estimate so 6.6 lbs = .825 Gallons (6.6/8=.825). I would probably round to 1 gallon, then check the preboil gravity and see if it is on par with what the recipe calls for and add water as needed.

Not entirely precise with the "pints a pound the world around" since it is based on water (LME is not water) and pint of water weights more than a pound (1.04 lbs), but its a starting point.

Honestly, considering the water in DME was a complete oversight. I put the steeping grains, hops, and DME in brewcipher and wanted to get IBU calculations and a total water volume that accounted for my boil length, hop losses, etc, and I just used that number. I should have scaled back by however much water is in the two cans of LME. If I had to guess, it's less than .825 gallons due to the extreme high gravity of LME. I overshot by about .3-.4 gallons after extending my boil to help compensate. I could tell I had too much volume as soon as I mixed the LME.

LME weighs about 11.8 pounds per gallon, so it's about 0.0847 gallons per pound
    2 cans LME = 6.6 lbs
So volume of two cans LME ~= 6.6 lbs x (0.0847 gallons per pound) ~= 0.56 gallons

    Vikeman,

Do you have any plans to go commercial with this? I have been using BS for quite awhile...bought 2 versions so far and haven't updated since 2.0. I viewed software as a necessary evil initially, but the more I brew the less relevant better software seems..just musing... cheers

I really like the BJCP 2015 angle

Nope. I keep adding to it for fun and to give back/pay it forward to the (mostly) homebrewing community.
