So most brewed on dates are cut and dry, but I'm struggling with some dogfish bombers. I have 2 red & whites one I bought last year and the one that hit shelves in NJ this past friday. The one I bought last year says Brewed in 2011D - could that be as simple as December 2011? The current one says brewed in 2012A?

    Can someone help?

You are confusing "Bottled on" dates with brewing dates. It's very rare for a brewery to note the brewing date.

Again, DFH uses "Bottled on" not "Brewed in" (at least, for the bottles I have around). For their 750ml bottles, they've taken to just giving them alphabetical designations - the first batch of the year being "A", the second "B", etc.

I've got a good stock of dogfish here some with actual date and times some with the method i mentioned above. Again, I've got 2 bottles here with Brewed in 2011D and Brewed in 2012 A - the batch reference makes sense though.

As others have said, bottled on dates are best, imho. Best before are also welcome. No dates on the bottles force me to hold bottles up to the light to see if anything "wrong"(ie floating particles, sludge, etc) is going on and the brewers who do this need to show more respect to us beer drinkers out there.

12 ounce bottles still use the full "Bottled on" date in standard format (as noted on the website linked above). The 750's I have of recent (last coupla years) vintage are all "Bottled in [YEAR]" with a batch letter. I think that previously DFH dated the 750's just as they did their 12 oz'ers.

Sounds like they've then changed their dating format again for the 750's then. Which is sad, since it's unusual for a brewer to go "backwards" as far as easily read and understood informative dating goes. Knowing when a beer was brewed is useless if you don't know how long fermentation and aging took, as well. And batch "C" is equally as worthless...
