I'll be in McLean for a week in early July on business, was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction? Would prefer something no more than a 30 min. cab ride away. Cheers!

Depending on the time of the day you plan on heading in, you could be into DC in about 20 minutes from McLean (it could also take you the majority of an hour at the wrong time).

In DC, I recommend The Churchkey and Pizzeria Paradiso. I hear good things about Meridian Pint but I have not had the chance to check it out myself.

There is also a Pizzeria Paradiso in Alexandria as well as a couple of Dogfish Head Alehouses (Fairfax and Falls Church).

Not sure about bars/breweries, but the TW McLean has a good bottle selection.

They have a nice line up. Not sure whats currently on tap, but I have enjoyed their beer in the past. About 30 mins from Mclean.

I have not been here before but I have heard alot of people speak highly about them. Much closer to Mclean.

    Cheers.

If you go to Mad Fox and it is after 5pm stop by Space Bar it is a couple blocks away. It is a small place but is worth checking out. Lost Dog in Mclean or Merrifield is also worth a stop.

Tuskies is a pretty cool place. The building is an old mill, very visually appealing. A bit on the expensive side but that beer dinner looks awesome.

Let us know which places you check out (including how you liked them) and review them if you get the chance...help to build up the knowledge base for others than travel frequently.

I've been to many beer dinners at Tuskies and they are always outstanding. I think the chef there (Chef Patrick) does his BBQ thing for the Lagunitas dinners. It's fuc*ing great.

I say skip Lost Rhino and do visit Mad Fox. Bars worth a visit are sadly all outside McLean, but I only hear good things about Galaxy Hut and Spacebar. +1 on ChurchKey - If you're there for a week, consider doing yourself a favor and take the Metro to ChurchKey. There is a stop right by that place and its simply the best in DC in my opinion.

    I hope that helps!

This may sound a little weird, but the Whole Foods in Vienna (just west of McLean on Rt. 123) has six or eight beers on tap in their cafe. If you decide to visit WF, also check out Norm's Beer & Wine for a great selection and a friendly knowledgeable staff. The MapleWood Grill next to Norm's has good food and six beers on tap.

Are the beers featured at the dinner the usual suspects or do the breweries provide them with anything special?

I cannot agree more. The majority of threads like this end up with no summary of what the OP ended up doing. A short summary can help everyone involved.

Usual suspects, I'm afraid, but the food is always well thought out and made to pair with the featured beers.

World of Beer is not bad for a chain as well. It's in Ballston - I mean you can't complain about a place that has St. Bernardus Abt 12 on tap!

Time for the promised review of my short but busy business trip to Mclean, VA.

Sunday: Visited the Total Wine in McLean, did not realize they couldn't sell liquor, not that it mattered, I was there for the beer  I picked up several beers to try, including DC Brau's Corruption, The Public and Penn Quarter Porter. All three were very very good, sadly I did not see their On The Wings Of Armageddon anywhere I went, it was constantly sold out. I also found two "shelf turd" 2012 Nightstalkers ( had never had, donated the one I did have to Big Gene's charity for his friend), some delicious Dragon's Milk and a Mogli (which I hadn't heard of).

Tuesday: After my meeting were over a friend I met while up there took me to Chantilly, which is about 20 min. from McLean. We stopped at the Total Wine there, and I was lucky enough to find some Mikkeller and Sour In The Rye, neither of which I have had. I tried one of the Sours and brought one back with me, frigging amazing. Before we headed back, located in the same plaza as the Total Wine was a Dogfish Head Brewpub. We stopped in to have a couple of beers, but I was saddened that they really didn't have anything special on tap, not even 120 or 75 minute, just the usual suspects you can pick up at any beer store. They did have several vintage bottles for sale of some of their "ancient and extreme" beers, but i'm not a huge fan so I passed. Did not try the food, but it looked good.

Wednesday: Finally beer dinner night. I wish I had taken more than just one picture, but the beer and food was coming fast and frequently. I will attach a link to the menu.

The food was amazing. The chef at Tuscarora Mill in Leesburg knows what he is doing. Everything paired wonderfully with the Lagunitas selection, and one of their employees (Lagunitas) spoke between every course, giving us a history of the brewery and telling us about the beers. FYI they will shortly be opening a new brewery in Chicago. The last beer on the menu Sonoma Farmhouse Saison I have not seen in stores, and it was excellent. The rest were very good, but available to me here in Florida.

Aside from all that I was able to try a number of regular Founders beers that we will hopefully have in Florida soon, and decided to bring back some of my haul. Luckily nothing broke, although TSA did search through my things as suspiciously wrapped beers probably triggered an alarm lol.

Overall great trip, lovely area, well stocked Total Wines and a GREAT beer dinner, I recommend visiting their website to see some of the upcoming ones. Cheers!

I haven't seen cans of Wings in Virginia yet. I have seen it on draft a couple places but i've had to go to the brewery to get the cans. Thanks for the write up. I will have to check out Tuscarora Mill sometime.

Thanks for the update. Glad the beer dinner at Tuskies was a good one! That was my go-to spot for quite a while.

    Cheers!

Glad you enjoyed your visit. I just wish I had seen this thread earlier since I live within walking distance of Tuscarora Mill and work right outside of McLean in Tysons Corner. I would have recommended you stop by Fire Works, the brick oven pizza joint next to Tuskies (and owned by the same group); they always have a great selection of beers on tap and a nice bottle selection if you're willing to shell out some cash. Next time!
