Webcams trained on the crowd are more likely to be found in bars promoting themselves as night spots with dancing and whatnot, for singles looking to mingle. Even based on that logic I doubt the number of customers the camera would attract would be as large as the number the camera would alienate.

But I'm ugly so cameras aren't my friends anyway.

Unless its for security reasons. I don't need to encourage any furthur narcissistic behavior by giving anyone else the option to know they can watch.

I'm okay with security cams but not wild about the idea of public webcam.

Nice thing is that the OP's bar listened to their customers and removed it. If another bar elsewhere finds a boost from the cams, that is their prerogative.

@Mantooth , did this bar have signs posted on the door about these cameras?

For insurance reasons most pubs I know have cameras everywhere. I don't really care for them.

To watch your taplist, especially if it changes on a regular basis? Sure. Watch live entertainment that might come in? Maybe. See the patrons in the bar? Absolutely not.

Some food for thought, a lot of public servants won't frequent your place then. Teachers, extension agents, etc. I know plenty of them and most I know make it a point to avoid letting people in their area know they drink, even going so far as to drive to other counties to buy their beer. Why? Because there is always someone who will judge them for having a six pack in their cart and it's scary how much power some people hold over a school system. They'll frequent bars and breweries, sure, because everyone is there to have a drink so no one judges. But you put in a webcam you just made it easy for the local busybody to peek in and find their kids 8th grade history teacher just having a couple to get over a rough week. Doesn't take much for that busybody to take a few screenshots and ruin that teacher's career.

Had a sign right beside the camera - but it could easily have gone unseen.
