I'll be heading to Anchorage for work at the end of October, and I was hoping some BAs would help me create a list of breweries to go to. So far the only brewery I am for sure going to is Midnight Sun. As I will have some free time on the weekends and a rental car I was wondering if there are any other breweries within reasonable driving distance that are worth checking out. Thanks!
Homer Brewing Company, in...Homer. They have a couple good stouts from what I remember. Cool spot to visit, anyway.
In Anchorage: Snow Goose Brewery/Restaurant (more for the beer than the food) Glacier Brewhouse (big and touristy, but the beer and food were good) Humpy's (not a brewery, but beer bar with good atmosphere and great fish/chips) Bear Tooth Grill (fond memories of the Fairweather IPA) If Pablo still has his food cart at 501 L Street open that late in the year, stop by for an awesome salmon quesadilla.
Midnight Sun: Tours, food/tasting room King Street: Tasting room Sleeping Lady: Brew Pub with onsite brewery Glacier BrewHouse: Brew Pub with onsite brewery Moose's Tooth/Bear's Tooth: Brew Pubs with off site brewery Anchorage Brewing: nada Humpy's: Best damn beer bar in the state! (shameless plug) Outside of Anchorage, the closest is Arkose Brewing about 40-50 miles north. Then, you have three nice places about 2 1/2 hours south (Kassik's, Kenai River, & St. Elias). After that, you are looking four or more hours of a drive, or plane, or boat....
If you're going to drive down to the Kenai, you could use my book as a guide: Beer on the Last Frontier: The Craft Breweries of Alaska, Volume I. It's on Amazon in paperback and Kindle. There's also a brand-new iPhone app: The Beer Up Here, that covers all the breweries in the state.
