I'm trying to compile a complete list of Breweries in Planning in MA. Can you add to this list of those actively and presently pursuing a new brewery?

    I've heard of:
    1. Down the Road
    2. Percival
    3. Castle Island
    4. Spencer Abbey

  2. pehodges

    pehodges Devotee (395) May 25, 2013 Massachusetts

Not sure Percival qualifies as "in Planning" as they are already selling beer.

I included them because, although they're contracting out of Paper City and are indeed selling beer, they've stated that they're also working on a production facility. I contrast this somewhat with groups that are contracting but don't have any stated plans to branch out on their own.

Stoneman Brewery in the western MA hilltown of Colrain got their licenses in this fall and will operate as a beer CSA model. First beer share distribution in mid-December! I'd consider them already brewin. A couple months ago they partnered with The People's Pint to release Stoneman Stock Ale, served at the Pint's brewpub in Greenfield.

Navigation brewing is in the planning stage but have bought some equipment and such. They are out of the Lowell/dracut area

I've been tinkering with the "List of Breweries in Massachusetts" wikipedia page. When I started, this page had little more than Sam, Harpoon, Ipswich, and Wachusett. It's just a list right now, organized by county, with links to most. Also have a section for "Breweries in Planning" and have listed ones I know of there with a link to evidence - this forum was helpful for a few of those!

Feel free to add any I've missed, messed up on whether it's a production or a contract brand, or add any others you know about - it's Wikipedia after all.

It's strangely hard to find a list of all beer brands, breweries, and brewpubs in one place! BA is typically missing a few, MA Brewer's Guild only lists members, and Yankee Brew News seems to list most, but might only list the ones who pay to be advertised (?). This is an attempt to do have such a list for Massachusetts! They're opening at such a rapid-fire pace it's hard for anyone to keep up!

beer CSA model? are there others in existence? sounds amazing. seems rather cheap to buy a share, considering the start up cost of a brewery with licenses etc.. or am i missing something?

Stoneman seems to be New England's first beer CSA. Google search turns up few others nationwide! Not sure how he is making it work financially. he's starting with about 100 initial shares sold at $400 a pop for six months of a case of bombers (12) per month. That's 72 bombers for $400, which = we the consumer pay $5.55 per 22 oz. - actually pretty reasonable in this day and age! 8 styles to start, and others in his recipe log to roll out month by month!

I'm lucky to live somewhat locally to him - I'm signed up and really looking forward to it!

    Go here http://www.sec.state.ma.us/cor/corsearch.htm

Search for Corporations and Trademarks containing "brew" or "beer" (you'll probably have to do 2 different queries) and you'll get about ~95% of the breweries in Mass.

You can also download MA's list of brewer licenses at http://www.mass.gov/abcc/staterenewals.htm It'll show you who currently has a license. You'll need to choose a few different lists, but it should help.

It'll take some work filtering out other things, but you'll find all of those breweries that aren't listed anywhere else (plus breweries in planning, who have licenses but hasn't opened yet).

I do similar queries (on VT's web sites) and it's how I keep track of Vermont's breweries/brewpubs for http://www.vtbeer.org.

Yes there were multiple opportunities to try before signing up. Locally focused though, as in had to drive to Colrain (serious middle of nowhere for real) but I live in Turners Falls (nearby and only slightly less boonies) so no big deal. Every CSA pickup, he has a tasting with free samples. Next one is 2/22! Something like 15 beers to try.

Is Lanigan still planning to open that contract brewery on the North Shore? I've heard from a few people that he doesn't have anywhere close to the financing he needs, but I wouldn't call any of them overly reliable. It's a cool concept, would like to see it get off the ground.

Check out my beta blog (no posts yet and it's sloppy but I've compiled a list of MA breweries) - scroll to the bottom for a list of fifteen MA breweries in planning, with corroborating links. In case you're wondering the background picture is my dog "drinking" a Blatant IPA. More bars should be dog-friendly!

If anyone sees mistakes or omissions let me know.
