Stopped in for the first time to Nutmeg in Burnsville today after hearing they hired former Barley Johns brewer JT Dalton. He was in fact there checking beer with a hydrometer amongst other duties, so I'm assuming they are now pouring his batches.
They currently have four of their own with two guest beers. All four were good beers, nothing off or bad. The Belgian Blonde was flavorful, but a bit sweet, the ESB seemed to be well done for the style, the Rye IPA had a nice hop punch, but nothing too crazy, and the Porter we had was our favorite. Quite sweet, but lots of chocolate and coffee flavors. Just a rich flavorful porter. One guest beer was Castle Danger's IPA or DIPA and I can't remember the second.

I was never there for the initial batches of swill, but I think they are actually safe to visit now for their own beers with someone who knows what they are doing.

Thanks for the update. Nice to see a change in the right direction. The only time I was there was in the transition period so I have no thoughts on the old or new yet but this is encouraging.

Yes, thanks for the update. As someone who suffered through their initial efforts, & with the dearth of any kind of brewpubs in the south metro, this is encouraging.

An update from Angry Inch in Lakeville:

"We have passed all of our inspections and we are officially a licensed brewery! But with the good news does come some bad news. Because we are not licensed as a wholesaler as of yet we are not allowed to serve at Pride Beer Dabbler this Friday. We want to apologize to The Beer Dabbler for any inconvenience we have caused of not being able to be there last minute. We would give almost anything to be able to be there and celebrate with all of you!

We are very excited to begin brewing finally this week and still hope to be open during Pano-O-Prog week. Thank you to everyone for your patience and support and we can't wait to serve you all your first pint of Angry Inch beer. CHEERS!"

For those who don't know, Pan-O-Prog is Lakeville's city festival, and starts July 4 and runs through July 10.

Anyone else concerned with them having any kind of beer ready for the public in 13 days (or less)? I'm not a brewer, and I know beer can turn around in a week or so (right?), but I imagine if this is the first time they're using their new equipment (legally, right?), that there's likely a learning curve and first batches, as we've seen other people rush out, may not be great.

I'm sure they need to make money and I can respect that, especially after about a year in waiting to open. Pan-O-Prog is a huge event and draws lots of people. But is the potential damage of opening too soon to such a large (maybe not dedicated or forgiving) audience potentially disastrous in the long run?

Draught and packaged beer is expected to arrive at area retailers mid-July.

Let's hope they clean the glasses before it's open to the public :stuck_out_tongue:

If they can't do the Pride Dabbler then how did they manage to be able to serve at the Winter Dabbler?

Another update (of sorts) -- New plan (?) for Hutchinson, MN:
3BC / Bobbing Bobber Brewing Company. No social media or presence of any kind, but there's swag available.

My best guess is that this is either a truly "glorified homebrewer", rather than a commercial enterprise, or something actually happened with the long-rumored "Dan Hart plan."
Either that snapshot was taken at the taproom in Waunakee, WI, or Tom Keim has a helluva horseshoe bar at home.

Here's some happier news out of Lakeville, straight from the Lakeville Brewing brewer's keyboard:

"We're pouring guest taps right now, but I think I'll have at least four of our beers on tap come Friday, and more to follow after that (eventually 7 or 8 ). Our Friday lineup will be an American Light Lager, Irish Red, Smoked Schwarzbier, and a Cream Ale, with maaaaybe our IPA. I'm not sure about the IPA at this point, because I don't want to rush it, but it's a possibility.

Friday may be a little messy (the owners have the mayor and a bunch of other people showing up), but feel free to make a trip either that day or whenever else it's convenient."

Unfortunately I'm out of town this weekend and won't be able to check this out until next week, but looking forward to hearing opinions from the august members of this thread

My landlord has lived in area since Summit Brewing opened, and is well-versed in local commercial realty gossip.

A few years ago he told me a taproom was opening "between 94 and University" -- Watertower Place (Lake Monster) is what I took that as, but after more sleuthing on my part it turns out several commercial agencies have been angling for potential taprooms in other spaces on the Green Line.

One such space was formerly Twin Cities Aikido (for many years) and Gremlin Theater:

It's already a livable, mixed-use neighborhood. But all of the small business owners I know would be happy to welcome a restaurant, bar, or even another taproom -- Northeast Minneapolis can't have all the fun!

Chaz - This will be a prime spot for a bar, restaurant or taproom , they are building phase two of the lofts behind the current building this year so will add a few more hundred people in that location and basically right in the Midway Brewing Hub with a bunch of other breweries close by. Can you build a brewery right on the line ? Thought it needed to be off in an industrial zoned area . Obviously would much prefer if it was right on the green-line there , would make it much more enticing for visiting . Hope we hear more about this one sometime soon .

It's several months since I last browsed the realtor's page for the property, but I'd be surprised to learn that it's been zoned (altered) to suit an industrial client. That this might be why no up-and-coming brewery or BIP has settled on the spot; It's a great location otherwise, with sub-level parking stalls (to complement Green Line and street level retail) on the way.

On the other hand, it might also make be an attractive location for one of the local beer bar or burger franchises (just imagine a New Bohemia, Red Cow, or Burger Jones in the area.) At any rate, neighborhood residents and soon-to-be residents would be happy to have another beer bar (or bar-bar) to frequent.

Here's an update on what was once reported to be a brewery, further east on University.

Silhouette Bakery in Frogtown (a.k.a. 'Little Mekong') was reported earlier to be opening a brewery and cafe in its new location. From the looks of it, it will have tap offerings, but maybe no tap beer, but only soda. So far there's no indication that it will be a brewery after all.

Their grand opening is Noon to 4 tomorrow.

I've got an update coming on my rankings but for a new place Roundhouse in Brainerd is very solid. Much better than either of the Nisswa places and right there with Jackpine....and they fill any growlers too so if you are just passing by and don't live in the area they don't force you to buy their glass like Jackass Brewing does. Smart business move with all the traffic coming through. I'll never stop at any of the other three places again....mainly because the two in Nissw are subpar and Jackass Brewing makes you buy their glass. They have solid beer but I'll go Roundhouse every time now.

Glad to hear they are making a good product. I'm planning to stop there on Friday and I didn't know what to expect.

Has anyone been to Disgruntled Brewing in Perham yet? It's only about 2.5 hours from me and I've been considering making the drive on a lazy Saturday.

I wonder how many of these new breweries realize that the beer community sees through it when they make the marketing claim of being the only brewery to brew 'off the wall,' 'unique,' 'experimental,' and all the other synonyms they can apply to beer. Most of these new breweries are making this claim so it is not unique to any of them. Plus, most of them are brewing the same old tried and true styles that work for any taproom. I don't see anything wrong with the same old styles as long as they are done well. I'm just sick of being lied to about how special/unique a new brewery plans to be.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it would be refreshing for a start up to say 'we are going to brew classic styles well'.

    End Rant

Jack Pine is doing crowlers now so you don't have to buy any glass if you don't want to anymore
