Breweries that don't post prices?

Had one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a brewery today and felt compelled to ask.

Walked in to try a brewery that was established and recently moved to a new location, and they had three bottles options listed and three options for growler fills. No prices anywhere. The guy filling growlers -- poorly, I might add -- had to ask the owner what to charge before he rang me out. I thought it was a little on the steep side too ($10/32 oz. of a 5.9% pale ale).

Anyone run into this elsewhere? I'm not even sure if it's legal in Massachusetts to not have prices posted, but I thought I'd see if this is a growing trend? FWIW, I did get the growlers, but I don't think I'll be back...

The breweries I've been to in Kentucky, Massachusetts, New York, and Tennessee have always posted their prices. I usually just run into this issue with beer stores (one in particular up here near me), but I always ask before I decide to fill. I'm not sure it's illegal, though I'm not privy on state laws concerning this, but more so an issue with laziness.

I should have asked, but I didn't want to be that guy to feel the need to ask how much everything is before buying. I was especially put off by the fact that the guy filling growlers didn't even know and asked the owner how much to charge me.

Maybe he's new, but just seemed strange to me...

I'm not surprised when beer stores have some inexperienced employees in terms of beer knowledge (I don't really mind, tbh), but it's strange someone at a brewery does not know. I'd say it's a new employee, which I understand. I've seen quite a bit of strange, so I'm not all weary lol.

ANY retailer that does not have prices in plain sight is a bit shady in my eyes.

From a legal perspective...if someone doesn't post a price, there's a question if the sale is actually binding...you can't sell something until the customer agrees upon the price!

I've not seen this type of scenario. Just sounds like a brewery that doesn't have its shit together at the new location possibly. But yeah, I would certainly ask what the prices were on the growler fills before ordering. As a consumer there is nothing wrong with asking at all & if the prices were imo too high I'd say "thank you. have a nice day".

Have seen it at breweries from time to time, personally I just ask what the growler prices are before ordering.

If not posted or apparent I always ask. It's a reasonable request and if posed in a friendly manner gets a like response.

Not posting prices is disrespectful and unprofessional in my opinion, and I tend to steer clear of any establishment that does so.

When there are no prices posted, I ask. Not always but most of the time. There are those places that make you fee that if you have to ask, you don't belong there, but I tend to avoid them. And if I get a 'tude when I ask, I give it right back or just leave the premises.

Thanx for the idea. If I ever go into a place that doesn't post prices, I'll make them a offer they have to refuse. Then I can put in my 2 cents about there being no price and say if you didn't want me to make an offer, maybe you should post the price you want in a conspicuous place.

Id love someone to dip into Contract Law using the price posted as an "invitation to treat" or make a counter offer that "the shop owner" can decline. It wouldn't go over too well but fun to watch.

No posted price = no purchase from me. Can you imagine going to a grocery store (or ANY store) with no prices on anything? Me neither.

I know Upland doesn't post prices. A 4 pack of their Coastbuster IPA goes for $10 at the brewery but if you want a growler it is $24. Why anyone would buy growlers of that (and they do) for more than 8 bottles cost is beyond me.

If the price isn't posted you should always ask, even if it doesn't matter to you. When they get tired of answering the question maybe they'll learn how to post the price.

That's why I stopped buying growlers of anything available in a bottle/can. At least here it's much more per oz, sometimes double. I don't get it. Sure it's less than 4 pints at a bar but at a bar I'm paying for the ability to hangout and to be able to socialize.

As far as prices posted I really don't go to whole foods much anymore because nothing is priced and asking about everything is a pain in my ass. The clerk once told me to stand in line and ask the price on anything as many times as you want. I put my beer down and walked out

    Enjoy
